Ben's POV

Five and a half weeks later...

"You are free to go!" the doctor announced, much to my delight. I hopped out of bed as soon as I was unhooked. I changed into proper clothing and hugged my best friend, Mike. It felt so good to stand on my feet.

"Hey buddy, it's good to have you back," Mike said.

"It's good to be back," I said in return, then immediately broke off from him. "Where's..."

Mike laughed, then led me out of the room to a room down the hallway marked Hale, Erica. My heartbeat sped up and I grew excited. I was going to see Erica after five whole weeks. Mike slowly opened the door. I could hear Jenny talking.

"...Ben's going to be so happy," she said. Mike swung the door open and I gasped.

There she was, standing by her bedside.

Erica.

Her eyes widened as soon as she saw me and her face erupted into joy. "Ben!"

We ran up to each other and I picked her up and spun her around, my eyes brimming with happy tears. As soon as I set her down, she pulled me into a tight hug.

"Ben, it's been a month," she said with a sad smile.

"A whole month," I replied. My voice was croaking, but I didn't care. "I've missed you, Erica."

"I missed you too, Ben," she said, smiling. I inhaled the gorgeous scent of lilacs and gunpowder. She ran her hand through my hair and ruffled it.

"We've been in the same building and we couldn't meet each other," I said, taking her arms in mine.

"Okay now, let's get going," Mike said. "We have a party to attend."

"What party?" Erica and I asked at the same time.

Jenny laughed. "You guys forgot? Happy birthday, Ben."

I gasped. I hadn't even when realized my own birthday was.

"Happy Birthday, Ben," Erica said, looking into my eyes.

"Thank you, Erica," I replied, staring back into her deep blue eyes.

She turned and headed to join Jenny, but I grabbed her hand. She spun around, looking at me in surprise. I yanked her hand softly but firmly, and pulled her close to me.

Then I kissed her.

Everything was perfect.
