My alarm on my phone goes off. Of course, it's one of the best songs: Magic by Yung Gravy. I've got to start my senior year of school on the correct path. I've got great friends and I hope the group can still be together even when we go to our perspective colleges.
My life has pretty much been planned out for me since I was young. The only thing is my grades have not been adding up to it. It's not like I'm not a smart guy, it's just there's better things for me to do. Here's one:
Football. The superior sport there is in high school. Though we are a small school, we still have a football team. I'm the quarterback, what can you expect? I used to be the wide receiver and substitute quarterback. Since our main quarterback graduated in May, I stepped up and it's been great.
I stop the alarm from going off and I get out of my bed. I step into my bathroom and I see how much of a mess I look. I went to a party last night and it was an interesting one. I turn on the sink faucet, grab my toothbrush and toothpaste. I start brushing my teeth when I hear a ping go off on my phone.
That's Maria. We've been "talking" this summer. She's in our friend group and I guess we just sparked an interest in each other? I honestly don't know what I want. My parents have met her a few times. Maria comes from a luxurious family. She's the girl that others wish to be. She's good looking dare I say it.
I text back to her letting her know I'm still tagging along. I finish brushing my teeth and turn the shower on so I look less trashy. Once I finish showering, I put on my outfit for the first day: something impressive. We're not talking about the neighboring schools who put on basketball shorts and go on their day. We're talking about name brands.
I go downstairs to see my parents have breakfast waiting for me in the microwave. They had to head out early for work. I see a note that my mom wrote saying,
"I hope you have a great senior year. We're proud of you. Don't make reckless decisions."
Ah, that's mom for you. She's always watching out for my best interests. My dad on the other hand is headstrong, but he still cares about me. I heat up my breakfast and I sit alone at the table waiting for my food to finish heating up. I answer a couple of messages and snaps before the microwave timer goes off.
I don't believe in the ideology of eating while using your phone but my friends have done it, so I do it out of habit. I'm trying to stop, but it's hard. I watch a couple of TikToks as I eat. I look at the time and I hop into my car before heading to school.
I meet up with Maria and our friend group Seth, Gus, and Julia. Julia mostly hangs out with Maria. That's her best friend. They're like almost inseparable. Not to be stereotypical but they're also on the cheer team.
"Holden, I thought you weren't going to show up after last night," Seth comments as I walk toward them.
"No, I'm here. Coach would have my head on a stick if I skipped. You know how he is."
I handshake the boys and acknowledge the girls. Maria wraps her arms around my arm and leans her head on my shoulder. I instead put my arm around her waist. I mean this is progress, right? We head inside and we see people meeting up with their friends.
"Oooh, definitely did not miss that when I was out," Maria comments in kind of a disgusted way looking at a particular person.
Here's what it is: We aren't fond of a particular girl named Valentina Fitzerguard. She's a quiet girl but has a lot of fire in her. She doesn't like us, and the feeling's mutual. She cannot stand me the most. It's been like that since high school started, and I don't question it. She is a genius, I'll give her props for that.
Maria goes up to her. We try to hold her back but it doesn't work out. I sigh. First day of school and I cannot avoid a havoc with this girl.
"Fitz," I acknowledge with a shady tone.
"Harvard."
"Can you please keep your girl away from me? She's disturbing me."
"What do you mean disturbing you? You disturb her with your presence," Julia comments.
"I was perfectly fine until she came up to me trying to cause issues. It's 7 am, can I please catch a break?" She rolls her eyes, shuts her book, and walks away.
The bell rings for a fifteen minute warning. This ought to be an interesting year.
