Gavin

My ideas of Kayla needing someone with a lot of money had crumbled and I felt a weight off my shoulders. She wasn't my mother.

Now, we were in my Jeep on our way to my uncle's house. Kayla said she had a good feeling about this, but I didn't know. It seemed like a dead end.

In my Uncle's house, we searched in the same places and a few extra. I was starting to lose any hope that we'd ever find it. Whatever we were looking for.

Kayla was kneeling at the fireplace where the Bible was again. It was open and she was running her finger along the page.

"You still think there might be a hint there?" I asked, standing behind her.

"I just have this feeling about this verse," she said, determination in her voice. I sighed and sat next to her. I looked over it again.

"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever"

"I don't know," I concluded. I stood and took the book with me, and then a piece of paper slipped out. I picked it up and on it, my uncle's handwriting met my eyes.

It's a hunt.

That was it. That was the message. Kayla took the note out of my hands. Her face lit up.

"It's a scavenger hunt! Whatever it is your uncle wanted to give you, he wanted you to find it."

Of course, Uncle Terry had to make things "interesting." He always tried to find a way to make you earn something. You couldn't just have anything.

"But how do we even know what to look for? Where are the clues?" I asked. She grabbed the Bible and opened it to the scripture she'd been reading.

"This is it." She had an excited smile on her face. If she was gonna be doing it with me, I felt it wouldn't be so bad.

"So what's the first clue then," I asked. She read the verse and looked up with a contemplative look.

"We have to think of what it means. It's saying God is our provider and protector. He gives us all we need and we don't lack anything. We are completely satisfied," she explained.

"Typically, food satisfied Uncle Terry," I laughed, but it was like a light bulb flashed above her head.

"Yes! Restaurants. There's a restaurant called 'Mary's Little Lamb.' Since the Lord is a shepherd... That can't be a coincidence."

I shook my head, but what else was there to do or try. "Alright, how far is it?"

We were in the car and Kayla had her Bible app open reading Psalm 23 over and over. She was so excited she was jumping up and down in her seat. I had to admit, it was kind of fun being all detective and solving mysteries and whatnot.

We pulled into Mary's Little Lamb, which was crowded, and parked. Kayla, as eager as she was, hopped out of the car as soon as I put the gear shift in park. I followed quickly to catch up.
