It was 9:35 am and the sun shone bright in the clear sky, but down below was an apocalyptic catastrophe . Everywhere was massive rock splits, fire and smoke. Not a single living soul in sight. All that littered the ground was blood, dead bodies and shambles left of the broken homes. You can hear agonizing cries from those who were trapped under trampled homes as they took in their last breath.

The world went completely silent and the only life source to be heard were the birds chirping miles away. Just among the waste land lied Maria. She was battered with bruises and half of her body was trapped under piles of burnt plywood and concrete dripping with blood. Her beautiful face that was as vibrant as an angel's, looked more like withered roses on a grave stone.

Her steady breathing turned into a coughing mess due to the excessive intake of smoke that burnt her lungs. She flickered her eyes open, slowly bringing her hand over her face to shield it from the blinding sun. She hissed in pain when she tried to move her legs, faintly realizing that her lower body was trapped.

Panic overwhelmed her and her eyes widen with fear when they took in the horrifying state of her once beloved home. She quickly struggled to get up but only managed to get herself in a sitting position. Her heart hammered with fear against her chest and her bloodshot eyes swelled with tears when she saw her mother's lifeless body lying on the dirt floor about 15 feet away from her. Out of desperation she tried to reach forward but her legs were held captive by the pile of waste.

Helplessness, it overshadowed her.
Despair, like gravity it dragged her down to the ground as she tried to pull herself out once more. Again, she failed to do so.

"Mom...mom...mom!!" She wails in anguish. Out of panic and cold sweat she was quickly pulled back to reality.

"Not again. Please stop, I don't want to remember. Its too much." She continues to mourn.

She was back on her bed , sweat oozing out of her body as fear clawed at her very soul. Her lit lamp, that sat on her cabinet draw next to her bed, did little to sedate the raging storm brewing in her heart . The sadness that built in her lungs, slithered its way through her veins and had her trembling like a broken branch in a hurricane. There was no strength left to fight back the tears that rushed down her cheeks.

She has been having frequent nightmares of her dead family she lost to the earthquake. She tried laying down on her belly and was on a sleeping schedule. Her brother even gave her a dreamcatcher but nothing ever worked. The nightmares only got worst. It was as if they were mocking her, forcing her to remember the loss that she wish to forget. She pulled her knees to her chest and cried her lungs out until her brother barged into her room and ran to her side.

"Maria! Hey, hey it's okay. I'm right here. It's just a dream." He coos in her ears as he pulls her to his chest and wraps his arms around her shoulders.

"No, It's not a dream. They're all...they're all dead. They are all gone Jacob", she wailed in reply.

Sorrow latched on to her heart and spread through out her body like a plague. Her head pounded painfully as she tried to block out the gruesome images of her mother's dead body that kept flashing in her mind. She curled herself into Jacobs chest sobbing loudly, praying to whom ever was listening that they'd pull her out of her misery.

Jacob was truly heartbroken by how crushed she sounded. This wasn't the first time he had to console her like this . The past year really wasn't easy for the siblings. After loosing their whole family to the earthquake, life has never been the same, especially for Maria. It pained him that she had to endure so much at such a young age. His frustration intensified by the knowledge that he could do nothing to vanquish the demons that invaded her dreams every night. All he could do is console her right now because he was all she had left.

"It's okay. God got us. Everything will be okay."

Maria sniffs the mucus that was pouring out her nose and looked up to his dark brown eyes. They always seem to have a calming affect on her. "I just don't understand why they had to die ? Like, if He got us, then why did He have to take them away from us? He should have taken us too !" She exclaims.

Jacob was shocked by her words. It angered him even more when she decided to blame God for their parents death. As a Christian he couldn't take this lightly. He got hold of her arms and looked intently into her eyes filled with anguish. She looked away not wanting to see the visible disappointment in his eyes.

Sighing he said,"Believe me it's hard for me too. Things can get a bit out of control sometimes but everything happens for a reason. We are in no position to blame God just because things didn't happen the way we expect them to. We just have to be strong, together. I got you, remember that. I promise I'll never leave your side."

She takes in a trembling breath and hesitantly looks up to meet his gaze filled with sincerity . Sticking out her pinky she says,"Pinky swear?"

He chuckled at this, crosses his pinky with hers and replies," Pinky swear." He smiles gently. "Feeling better?"

"I'll be fine." Her voice was so shallow but Jacob heard her nonetheless. He couldn't help the warmth he felt inside when he saw her smile. It was small but its better than nothing. Suddenly he had an idea.

"Let's play a game."

"I'll pass." She grumbled while pulling away from him to lean her back on the headboard. Jacob does the same and gets hold of her hand saying, "Come on. It'll be fun and help get your mind off things. Tell you what, if you agree to play then ill take you to any restaurant of your to choice for our next brother-sister date this weekend. Anything you want, you name it. I'll get it.What do you say?"

She thought about his offer for a minute then rolled her eyes replying "Ok fine. What do you wanna play and it better not be one a those "I spy with my little eye" games coz I'm not playing that. Im no longer a kid."

Laughing he goes on to interrogate her,"Oh really? So you think you're a grown woman now ?"

"I'm 15 and in the ninth grade so that counts. And besides, Mom always said that I would be a great one some day." She sighs at the memories that invaded her mind at the mention of her mother.Sadness settled on them once more like a sunset melting over the horizon on a chilly day. It clouded over them, arising the misery that was slowly fading away. Jacob sensing this pulled her for a hug and rested a gentle kiss on her forehead saying, "Lets go with One word."

Maria nuzzled into his chest and said,"Ok, ill start. There..."

"was", Jacob replied.

" A", Maria said. They would go on saying one word after another until they came to a full stop.

"boy"

"who"

"had"

"AIDS."

Jacob burst out laughing," What the heck! Why does he have AIDS?"

Maria shrugs ,chuckling a little, " I don't know."
