Pain. Yelling at me to wake up from this deep, unconscious slumber. I try to open my eyes, but the pain is excruciating. As if my eyes are sitting on a bed of hot coals. I hear someone calling out to me as if they’re on the opposite side of a door. Distant. Muffled.

“Clara, can you hear me?” – I hear the voice clearly as if the door is slightly ajar now but to who the voice comes from; I do not know – “You’ve been attacked by those things in the woods.”

I try to open my eyes again and this time with some success. Bright, agonizing light seeps into what little vision I have and surrounds the silhouette looming over me. As my eyes begin to adjust to the light the silhouette slowly comes into focus. I see my father’s favorite brown derby hat first and then his concerned but also relieved face underneath it. I start to sit up, but he places his hand firmly on my weak, quivering shoulder.

"Try not to move, Clare. You've sustained serious injuries to your head and left leg."
