I woke up this morning and cracked open my door just enough to get the newspaper. I have to hope each day that no one sees me because I have been avoiding the draft. Just more than week ago I made a deal with the newspaper boy, I told him I'd pay him extra if he brought me the newspaper each day, and kept this to himself. The reason I want the paper so much is the fact that each day it prints the person who had died the night before, and where they were found. I'm investigating and trying to find evidence on who or where the killer might be. Sadly each day when I've arrived at the scene the clean up crew has already been through there and taken the body.
I'm going out the back door into the alley behind my apartment to head to the crime scene, and I heard the sound of footsteps and I froze. The last thing I wanted was to be seen, especially by soldiers. I remained still and let them pass, and then I began to move again, but with far more caution in my step. Finally, I reached the end of the alley, which led out to a courtyard, and dead in the center of it there was a sewer hatch. I use the sewers so that I can navigate the city undetected. I sat there and scoped out the surroundings to make sure that no one was nearby. Once I had made sure that the coast was clear I ran for the sewer hatch, and lifted it to reveal a ladder that seemed to lead down into darkness. Although I knew very well what was down there. Over the course of the previous seven days I had learned the layout of the sewers quite well. Then as if by instinct I stepped onto the ladder, took a few steps down and then replaced the hatch above my head.
Once I reached the bottom of the ladder there was complete darkness, I then found the lantern I had left beside the ladder and lit it. The glow was dim but enough to know where I was. I then headed off to find my destination. Dreadfully, it was in the middle of downtown, but I think I should be able to make it through undetected. Then I hear gunshots coming from above, yet I don't stop, because none of the German soldiers would dare come down into the sewers. I continue walking for about an hour and I have to take several detours due to cave ins, but I'm not in any hurry. I finally find the ladder to the hatch that I know leads to where I intend to go. Then I sit down and take out a slice of bread that I had tucked away for when I got a bit hungry, and took a few bites of it although it wasn't very appetizing due to the fowl stench of the sewers. After I had taken a few bites of the bread I put it away to finish later. I then climbed up and barely opened up the hatch, just enough to see out of and looked around to make sure no troops were coming by. Then once everything checked out ok, I lifted the hatch off the hole and crawled out.
Being out in the open like this was always unsettling for me, because there was always the chance I would be in the wrong place at the wrong time, so I quickly bolted to cover. Then the street sign caught my eye. It was faded but legible and it read vermillion place, than I knew I was in the right place. Then I searched around for the house I was looking for, and then I saw it. It looked like it had been broken into, but every house looked that way though, but you could just tell it was this house, so I creeped over there and stepped inside. With every step I took the floorboards creaked, so I tried to be light footed. I was searching through the house when I saw it a puddle of blood in the residents bedroom. The blood looked fresh so I knew that this was the place. Sadly there was no body, but I still had things to work with. First, I took out a vial and took a sample of the blood. Then I noticed a slight bulge in the bloodied covers of the persons bed, so I removed the covers and found a small pistol. It looked as if it had never even been touched before. I checked the clip and saw that it was empty so it was useless but I put it in my satchel just in case. As I went through the persons things I didn't see anything that would serve as a clue, so I grabbed my satchel and made my way out.
