Today was my mom's birthday and after school I had to go and get her birthday gift. When I woke up for school this morning, she was asleep and I didn't want to wake her so I just sent her a quick happy birthday text while I waited for the guys in the cafeteria.

[ Alyssa ] : Happy Birthday Mom! I love you and I hope you have an amazing day! Sorry I didn't tell you in person, I didn't want to wake you. But I'll see you tonight for you dinner.

[ Mom ] : Thank you baby, I love you too. And behave at school, alright? I'll see you when you get home.

"Hey Alyssa," Johnson said coming up to me along with Sam and Jack. Aw, my best friends! "You wanna come hang out with me and the guys tonight? We're going to chill at Nate and John's place. We might just watch movies, I don't know yet."

I sighed, "I would love to but I can't. It's my mom's birthday dinner tonight and I can't miss it. It would destroy her and I don't want to do that to her."

"Oh right," he nodded. "My bad, I forgot. Maybe next time?"

I nodded and smiled. "Yo Alyssa, don't you have ISS today?" Sam asked me and I nodded, rolling my eyes. "Damn, how many days do you have? And what the hell did you do this time?"

"I have three days in ISS and three days suspension," I sighed, running my hand through my hair. "And I didn't even do anything bad! Supposedly, coming to school out of dress code is a crime so they gave me what's next on my punishment list."

Jack laughed and shook his head. "You're so bad. Why can't you just follow the rules?"

I shrugged, "Maybe I get it from my dad, I don't know. But I got to go, I can't be late or she'll make me do more work than what I'm supposed to do. Bye guys, see you later!"

I walked into the house with my mom's gift bag in my left hand. After school I stopped by the mall and bought her this Cartier bracelet that she has been wanting for the longest time. "Hey, did you get mom's present?" Josh asked, coming into the living room.

"Yup got it right here," I smiled and held up the bag. "Do you think she'll like it?"

He nodded. "Are you crazy? I think she'll love it."

"Alright guys," I sighed as Max and Cameron joined us in the living room, "the guests will be arriving in about forty five minutes so we have to get the house cleaned up! Mom will be home from work in like an hour so chop chop chop!"

I called the catering service that was catering for my mom's dinner party and made sure that they were still able to make it. After being on the phone with them for a few minutes and going over the details again, I thanked them and told them to please be on time.

"Did you get the caterers?" Josh asked as he was washing the few dishes that were in the sink. I nodded and he smiled. "Alright, what's next?"

Having a lawyer for a mother is not easy. That means we all have to be in charge of her dinners and we need to make sure everything is going smoothly. Of course, she helps out but we need to put in our share of work as well. And tonight is a big night for her, being her birthday and that she accomplished becoming a partner in the law firm.

Tonight had to be perfect. I couldn't let my mom's coworkers think we were so crazy ass family that was dysfunctional because we're not. Even though all of mom's coworkers know us and love us, there will be some new people here tonight. People that don't know us.

   It's all about first impressions.

One by one, the guests started piling into the house. My little brothers stood at the door in their tuxes greeting each and every one of them. My brother and I were the hosts of this party so we were also going around and greeting the guests as they settled in.

I was talking to Ms. Martin, my mom's secretary, when I saw a very familiar brunette in the crowd. "Excuse me for a second, I will be right back," I smiled politely at her. "Thank you for being here tonight Ms. Martin."

She smiled back at me and I watched as she walked off somewhere in the distance. She is such a sweet lady I swear. I walked through the crowd, greeting some people as I walked through, until I got to Sam. "Hello Mr. Wilkinson," I greeted him in a fake British accent. "I am glad that you are here on this wonderful night."

Sam's dad was also a lawyer so that's why he was here. His dad is one of the head lawyers in the business as of right now and he's just the sweetest guy ever. "Well hello to you too Ms. Tores," he replied in a fake British accent as well. "I am glad to be here as well. Such a lovely party you have thrown."

I laughed and Josh came up to me. "Hey, mom is here so we have to go give our speech."

I nodded. "Alright, I'll catch up with you in a bit Sam. I need to go give my speech."

I walked hand-in-hand with Josh over to the to the stairs and Max handed each of us a microphone. "Hello everybody," I said and waited a few seconds for everyone to quiet down. "I would like to thank you all for coming out here tonight."

"Tonight is a very special night for our mother, Helen Tores," Josh spoke as everyone gathered around where we were standing. "Not only is she celebrating her birthday but she is also celebrating the achievement of becoming a partner in the law firm, which is a major honor."

I saw mom smiling at us from the crowd. "My mom has accomplished so much in her life and I am so proud to call her my mother," I smiled widely as I thought back to all her accomplishments so far. "She is the greatest mom and the best lawyer. So lets give a round of applause to my beautiful mother, Helen."

The crowd erupted into cheers and they all began clapping. "It is such an honor to host this amazing party," I smiled looking at the crowd. "Thank you all again for coming out here tonight. I hope you all have a wonderful night. Thank you."

"Thank you guys so much for this amazing party," my mom said as the last few guests left. "This was so much better than I thought it would be. I love you guys so much. Thank you for an amazing night, I couldn't ask for a better way to spend my birthday."

Wow tonight really was a huge success. It ran so smoothly, nobody complained, the food was great, and the guests were just amazing people. "Oh I almost forgot," I said and ran over to the kitchen. I opened a cabinet and grabbed the gift bag and quickly ran back to where my mom and siblings were standing in the living room. "This is for you," I stated handing her the gift bag. "I wanted you to open it separately from all your other gifts."

She took the bag from my hands and her eyes widen as she saw what was inside. "Oh my God, you kids are the greatest. I love you guys so much!"

My phone dinged on the coffee table and I saw Sam's name pop up on the screen.

[ Sam ] : Amazing party Alyssa! Also, you looked beautiful tonight.

[ Alyssa ] : Aha, thanks Sam. You didn't look too bad yourself.

Author's note : As you can tell (if you have read this before it was rewritten), the story has changed completely. Alyssa's age, everything. Because I am just now realizing that if you're a sophomore, you're around the age of 14/15. And my writing skills are way better now (my paragraphs aren't in a big blob anymore instead they are now separated apart).
