CAMPBELL TOWN ,
Year of 1998, February 11th
The night was calm and quiet as the only sound of chirping of the crickets could be heard. The night’s breeze was relaxing and refreshing as the neighbors of the Florez family were out on their front porches enjoying the quiet night. It was a surprise how they were not chattering out loud with each other for they were the most loud and talktive people in part of the small town, known to be as the Campbell town.
Every often, the Florez family would get out of the house and mingle with their friendly neighbors under the shiny stars and tremendous moon. But tonight, none of them were able to as one of their greatest friend had come over after many long months.
George Florez sat at the end of the dinning table with smile on his face looking at his friend, Rustam Williams, who had come from the city for a brief visit.
They both were smiling at each other as the bare lines of wrinkles showed at the end sides of their eyes. After all, who wouldn’t smile with happiness after seeing their best friend after a long time? Seventeen year old Julia Florez, looked at her father with pure joy and amazement as the old man smiled his rare smiles for once after her darling mother’s death.
Being an only child without a mother or a sibling was very hard and dreading to poor Julia, but she never once complained about anything as her dear mother had passed away on her delivery bed eight years ago, giving birth to her second child, who passed quickly after his mother.
From that time, everything had changed in the Florez family. There was barely any celebrations or laughter in the house anymore. Even though they were always out with the neighbors chatting cheerfully, it was visible that George was forcing himself only for his daughter.
As much as George tried to move on past his wife’s death, it was clear to Julia that it was just impossible as he loved her more the life itself. Looking at the other side of the table, she gazed at her father’s dearest friend, Rustam Williams.
Rustam too had lost his wife long time ago for a deadly disease had tremendously spread in the city. But never once had Julia seen the man in poor moods or distress.
Both the widowed men seemed to connect in a way better than with anyone else. Sometimes it irritated Julia to see her father share feelings and deep memories with his friend and not her. She wanted to be the one who her father could lean against and empty all the sorrow and distress from his heart. She never had anyone who could truthfully trust her and connect with her personally as she desperately wanted because she herself had a lot of emotions that were bursting to come out. She immediately dismissed the thought and once again, paid her full attention to the two men in front of her.
It pleased Julia to see her father smile and laugh once again with carefree and pure happiness after a very long time.
She knew that she could never be the reason to make her father be the way he used to be before her precious mother’s death, but she knew she was the reason for his living. She was the only reason he carried on his life like any normal man and support the life of his daughter.
