A Mistake Could Change A Lifetime

Chapter 19

Regina and I started taking couples counseling. We saw a wonderful doctor named Dr. Gilani. She congratulated us on noticing that something needed to be worked on and we took the proper  precautions to take care of it. We had weekly meetings with her for about 6 months until she thought we understood why we both closed down about some somethings and then eventually shut the other person out until it tuned into an argument. She helped us learn to talk to each other more. Dr. Gilani said we were doing a great job working together so she told us that we could cut down on our appointments. Then we just saw her once a month after that.
Today Regina and I are preparing for Henry's 2nd birthday. Last year for his 1st birthday we only had a small gathering. He was in the hospital on his birthday so we just had a small cake when he came home and a few friends to celebrate with us. This year Henry is totally fine so we wanted to give him a nice party with some of his friends from the daycare center plus of course their parents. Granny made some of the food and the Minions birthday cake. She had things that kids love to eat and food that adults would eat. Regina and I were grateful that Henry went down for an early nap because when he woke up we had just enough time to bathe him and get him dressed into his minions costume that he wanted to wear for his birthday. We told him he could wear whatever he wanted and that's what he wanted. It was an all minions theme. "Ok kid. Are you ready for your big boy birthday party?"  He giggles and Regina and I smiled at him.  I picked him up and held him close. Regina kisses him on the forehead and said. "Ok my little prince lets  go see everyone that came to celebrate you".  He clapped his hands and laughed. He's so excited. I'm still holding our son when Regina says to me. "Darling why don't I go downstairs and get everyone ready for you and Henry to make the grand entrance?"  "That sounds great babe. We will be waiting at the top of the stairs for you to tell us to come down".   "Ok dear. I'll see you both downstairs". She kisses me, then kisses Henry and snuggles into him. "Ok my birthday prince I'll see you in a few minutes".  She kisses his forehead and leaves the room. I take a deep breath and let it out. "Ok kid. I'm ready when you are".   "Ma Ma". He says as he touches my face. "Yes my boy, I'm your ma ma and I'll always will be. Let's go in the hall and wait for mommy to call us down". I walk out of his room and wait for Regina to call us down, when she does I hold my son close and I walk down the stairs. I stand in the foyer and take a deep breath. I hate when I think eyes will be on me. "Everything is fine my love. All those people are our friends. Let's go celebrate our sons birthday". I nod and say. "Ok babe. Let's go".  We walk into the living room and everyone clapped as we walked in with Henry. Ruby and Granny walk up to us with a candle lit birthday cake. Everyone sings happy birthday and Henry is absolutely loving it. He's so happy. He's clapping his hands and giggling. He has the biggest smile on his face. When everyone is done singing the birthday song Regina and I help Henry blow out the candles and everyone clapped again. Ruby cut the cake and gave Henry the piece with the most frosting. I put him in his highchair and Regina gave him the piece of cake. He did everything he could to it. He ate it. He smushed it. He got it all over himself, as well as Regina and I, but we didn't care. This is our son and it's his birthday. When we thought he was done destroying his cake I took him upstairs to get cleaned up and changed, Regina stayed downstairs to mingle with all our guests. About a half hour later when I came back downstairs with my son I heard shouting going on in the living room. "Mother how dear you come here on the day of my sons birthday party and say all these lies in front of everyone. When will you just let me live my life?  I love Emma. She is Henry's biological parent. I don't care what has happened in the past. That is not who she is any more". Regina was basically yelling at her mother when I walked into the living room.  "Regina is everything ok?"  I asked as I held Henry tight. "Everything is fine my love, my mother was just leaving".  I nodded as I saw Cora pick up her purse off the coffee table and stared Regina and me down. "This is not over Regina".  "It definitely is mother. Goodbye".  Cora stomped her way to the door and made sure to slam it on her way out. "Regina what's going on?"  She takes Henry from me and holds him close. She looks at me and says. "Can we please talk about this later. It's our sons birthday?"  "Sure. No problem".  She's looking at me like she doesn't know me anymore. What did Cora say to her?  Regina hands Henry to Ruby and leaves the room.  I follow her into the kitchen and and see her by the sink. I walk up and put my arms around her waist and kiss her cheek. She moves out of my arms and says everything is fine which I don't believe at all. I watch her leave the kitchen, then I find her back in the living room having fun dancing with Ruby and Henry. I just feel lost like Regina doesn't want me here. I see Granny starting to clean up one of the food tables so I go to help her. I keep looking at Regina and she keeps looking at me. The night slowly comes to an end as everyone leaves and Henry is sleeping in his playpen. It's just after 8 o'clock at night and it's time to get Henry changed and into bed soon. I pick him up and Regina quickly comes over and takes him from me. "Don't worry dear I'll take care of Henry and get him ready for bed. You get some rest".  "I can help babe, I don't mind". She's to quick to answer. "No it's fine". She gives me a fake smile and walks upstairs with our son. "What the fuck?"  I say softly to myself. I sit on the couch for a while then I check the windows and doors to make sure everything is locked. I go upstairs and Henry is tucked into his crib. I lean in to gently kiss his forehead and and whisper "I love you" to him, then I go to mine and Regina's bedroom. When I walk in I hear the shower running so I just change into my boxer shorts and a tank top and get in bed. I lay down facing the opposite way from the bathroom and Regina's side of the bed. I feel her get in and move near me. She kisses the back of my neck and whispers. "I do love you Emma". Then she moves away from me and shuts the light off. Then I think she falls asleep. It takes me a while to get to sleep. What the hell did Cora say to her to make her act this was towards me?  Hopefully we can work this out. I love the life Regina and I are making together.
