"We're almost there so try to stay awake," Catheryn said, "Or at least try to help me see through this damn fog."
Joyce gave a hum of acknowledgment. Her eyes steadily watching the mist outside her window while her hands fidgeted with the phone in her lap. With the hood pulled as far as she could past her head, she leaned to her right, just barely able to feel the ice cool touch of the glass pane feel against her face.
She couldn't help but feel irrationally irritated at the situation. Joyce had wanted to stay home for summer break and at least make the best of it before college, but her parents just had to go and travel home to Korea for their own selfishness. Something about an anniversary? She didn't care.
Being in her home country would be ten times more comfortable than even being anywhere close to Oklahoma. Joyce and Catheryn were on thin ice just being half white and passing. They weren't afraid of being discriminated—they've faced some of that in their lives already—it was the fear of being completely rejected by the rest of the population.
So here she was, stuck going to live with her aunt on her dad's side in fucking Tulsa, Oklahoma. She doesn't mind being with her sister, but it's completely unfair that they have to live in some muddy small town while their parents went off to their own homeland.
So here the sisters were now, miles away from their home and closing in to their destination.
After a moment of silence in the car, Joyce asked aloud not expecting any serious answer, "Do you remember that one movie with the Mist."
Catheryn raised an eyebrow, "Uh, The Mist?"
"Yeah that's what I'm talking about. The Mist outside."
"No, the movie is called The Mist."
"Oh," Joyce paused, then giggled, "Cool."
Catheryn rolled her eyes and continued to watch the road, "Why? Were you going to bring something up about the movie or is that it?"
