We were sitting around the large open fire that sat, pride of place, in the living room. The room felt as cosy and inviting as it had looked from the outside. We had just finished an amazing dinner cooked by Tom - yeah, he can cook too - and were now preparing to decorate the tree. Jenn, Emma, Tom and I were taking care of the tree while Adam and the others were decorating the rest of the cabin.
The tree was huge. It must've been about 10ft tall. It stood next to the fireplace and smelt amazing. "So, the owners say they left decorations in the cupboard for us, someone care to help me get them?" Tom stood up, looking down at us where we sat on the floor. Emma wasn't really capable of helping him - she was sound asleep on the couch and none of us had the heart to wake her.
"Rose'll help!" Jenn shouted before I could get a word in edgeways, practically pushing me toward him.
Tom smiled, "Great, let's go." He turned and made his way out of the room. I slowly followed him, throwing Jenn an evil look as I headed after him. She just winked and laughed. She knew how attracted I was to Tom and she wasn't going to stop until something happened, apparently.
Shuffling out into the hallway, my thick woolly socks sliding slightly on the wooden floor, I made my way towards the massive cupboard that the decorations were kept in. The door was swung open into the hall and, as I walked towards it, I was greeted by the nicest bum I'd ever seen. Tom was leaning over, picking a box up off the floor. I was abruptly brought out of my little daydream when he stood upright before turning to face me.
"Can you grab this one for me?" He smiled as he handed me a box, looking me dead in the eye. I tried my best not to turn into a puddle of goo as I took the box from him, feeling like a giddy teenager with a crush. "Sure." I smiled, biting my lip. His eyes fluttered to my mouth where they lingered for a second. His hand slid against mine as he handed me the box and goosebumps ran up my arm. He paused for a second, making me think that he felt it too. Looking back up he smiled, speaking quietly, "Thanks", before he turned to grab the remaining boxes.
Heading back to the living room, I dumped the box down by the side of the couch, Tom following suit. "Well, looks like the tree's down to us." I said to him as he took the lid off one of the plastic boxes. Jenn had conveniently decided she would help the others decorate the cabin. "The cabin is a lot bigger than the tree." was her justification. The theatrical wink and mouthed "Go for it!" when Tom turned his back revealing her true motive. She always had been sneaky, that one.
"First thing's first" Tom spoke up, "We need to untangle these lights." He laughed gently as he held up a mass of green wire and tiny light bulbs. We sat cross legged opposite each other on the floor by the fire and set to work unravelling the bulbs from their wire prison.

"She looks amazing." Tom whispered to me as we sat on the floor, backs against the massive corner couch, admiring our work. Gazing up at the tree, he was right. "We did good." I turned to smile at him for a moment before turning my gaze back to the tree. "We sure did." He replied as he wrapped his arm around my shoulders and pulled me gently into him, kissing my hair as he did.
Despite my heart pounding at his actions, I managed to keep my composure and leant my head on his shoulder, his arm cradling me while we sat there, the only light in the room coming from the tree and the blazing fire.
"This is nice." He whispered, sighing gently into my hair. "I've been needing a break for so long."
"Me too." I replied, sitting more upright, Tom's arm still draped over my shoulder. "Jenn's always giving me a hard time for working so much."
We sat for a moment, just looking. Neither of us saying anything, just comfortable in our own silence, in our own little world. Tom raised his hand, bringing it closer to my face, his gaze flitting between my eyes and lips the whole time he did. My heart rate was climbing, steadily climbing, feeling like my chest was struggling to contain it. He slowly reached forward and tucked a piece of hair gently behind my ear. His fingertips sending a jolt through me when they grazed my skin.
His lips parted slightly as he - achingly slow - closed the gap between us. I could feel his breath on my lips as my eyes fluttered shut.
"WOOOOOOO!" My eyes shot open and I was met with Tom's face, mirroring mine. He sighed and his head fell, forehead gently touching mine as the voice screeched again, "Jenny and Tommy, sitting in a tree! K-I-S-S-L-M-N-O-P!"
Jenn.
I could've throttled her.
"Wait, that's not -hic- right. Lemme try a-again." She stuttered but before she could I jamp up and grabbed her by the arm and marched her away. "Say goodnight Jenn." I said, anger pouring from my voice. "Goodnight Jenn!" She giggled, thinking she was funny. I turned to look at Tom, sadness was etched on his face. 'I'm sorry' I mouthed at him, he gave me a half-smile before turning back to the fire, his gaze falling to his legs.
I threw open the door to Jenn's room and she staggered in, "I did, I did something bad, didn't I?" she said, falling down on her bed. I sighed as I bent down to take her slippers off of her feet before swinging her leps up and tucking her in under the covers.
"You get some sleep hun." I turned off her lamp and headed to the door.
"I'm sorry Rose." Her voice cut through the darkness before I heard her breathing steady.
Closing the door gently, I heard voices coming from the living room - the group all back in the same room and enjoying their night. Looking along the hall into the living room I saw Tom, chatting with Adam, a bottle of beer in his hand.
He saw me and smiled that same half-hearted smile he did earlier, looking like he was sorry that we were interrupted. I contemplated going back to the group and stood still for a few seconds.
I wanted nothing more than to go back to Tom, sit and chat the rest of the night away with him. Maybe find out what would've happened had we not been interrupted. But now that the whole group was in the room and had heard Jenn's outburst, I couldn't really face it.
Deciding it would be too awkward to face Tom again tonight, I lifted my hand giving him the smallest of waves and mouthing a 'night' to him. His smile fell, 'sweet dreams' his response and I turned into my room for the night, falling into bed and wondering what might have been.
