October.
I was putting the finishing touches to my outfit for this evening. It was Emma's annual Halloween party and, how can I put this, I wasn't dreading going. I wasn't exactly looking forward to it but I was feeling ok about it.
Work, as usual, had been ridiculously busy which had left no time for anyone or anything. Mostly anyone being Tom and anything being 'us'. We always kept in touch when he was in the country - which was getting rarer and rarer these days - and he's been amazing to me ever since he found me in a blubbering mess when things with Jake went sour. But no. Still no 'us'. Our timing still sucks.
We'd planned to meet up during the summer, try to sort things out between us. But, 2 days before we were due to meet, I had fallen asleep outside in the sun and managed to get some horrible burns and sunstroke which landed me in hospital for a day or two. So, bam, no holidays for me. Well done Rosie, you grade A pillock!
So, back to halloween. I pushed the last kerby grip into my hair and sat back, admiring my work in the mirror that sat on my dressing table. My long brown hair had been wound into 2 large buns, one sat atop each ear - Princess Leia was taking shape. I looked over my room to my wardrobe - goosebumps making their way onto my skin.
Hanging on the door of my wardrobe was the dress. Jenn had taken it upon herself to pick my dress up for me. And Jenn being the Jenn she is didn't go for the outfit I'd hoped. "You're not wearing a big white sheet to the party!" was her reasoning when I found out what she had picked up for me. Unzipping the familiar suit carrier once more, I stared at my fate, slipping it off the hanger and over my head.
You see, this Princess Leia dress was skin tight and had a massive slit that went right to the top of my thigh which showed my entire leg. I didn't think I could pull it off but Jenn assured me I could.
"Jenn, I've never seen Star Wars but I know Leia's dress didn't look like this." I stood infront of her, my leg sticking out to emphasise my point. She just laughed at me, "You look amazing honey! Any guy will have his fantasies become reality tonight." She winked at me. I stood with a blank look, wondering what on earth she was talking about. "Oh, come on Rose! Every guy our age grew up with Leia on their walls. They loved her. And they're going to love you looking like that."
I sighed and slumped away from her to my room, picking up the white go-go boots that went with the dress. Pulling them on and zipping them up to my knees I stood up, smoothing my dress down and tucking my toy gun in my belt.
20 MINUTES LATER
We stood shivering on Emma's doorstep. We'd rang the bell 5 minutes ago but we could hear the music from outside so we obviously weren't heard. I stood, my finger continually pressing the doorbell - she'd hear it eventually.
Sure enough she did and we sprinted inside, glad to be in the heat away from the bitter cold. It was only halloween but it was getting colder and colder.
"Jeez, Em! We thought you were leaving us to die out there!" I said, rubbing my arms as I took my coat off. "I'm sorry hun. Come in and get warme-" She stopped suddenly when I turned to face her. She stood staring at my outfit making me feel even more self conscious than I had previous.
"I know, it's a bit, em, not really me, huh?" I said, trying to strategically cover my body with my arms but failing miserably.
A smirk played on her face, making its way to her eyes. "Oh it's not that hun. Definitely not that." She tried to fight back a small laugh, "Let's just say you're well suited to one of the other guests." She grabbed my hand and pulled me into the living room, Jenn follwing us.
