" the Curse of the Bog "****
The night was peaceful, broken only by the guttural bellowing of bull frogs as they left their ponds. The cats of BogClan were safe in their nests, gripped by their slumber. All except for Quillheart, who had been woken by an unexpected visit from Serpentstar.
The russet and gray tom sat at the entrance to the nursery, his yellow eyes dark. Quillheart had curled tighter around her three kittens, the tail fur spiked. "I don't believe you," she whispered.
"But it is true," Serpentstar muttered, "Geckokit has the sickness. It is not safe for him to be here any longer." The leader looked down at the wiggling mass of kittens, focusing on a tan colored tom-kit littered with brown speckles.
Quillheart bent down to nuzzle Geckokit, inhaling his soft kitten scent. "But he smells fine," she mewed, her voice growing desperate.
"Do you think I'd wish this fate on my own son?" Serpentstar growled, "I know what I've seen, in the stars. Geckokit is a danger to you, to us, to the whole Clan. He must be banished."
Never before had a BogClan kit fallen victim to the mysterious sickness. How cruel must it be for Quillheart to lose one of her precious offspring to this fate. But she knew that she could not argue any longer. Geckokit's destiny was sealed.
Carefully, Quillheart picked Geckokit up by his scruff and placed him on the bare earth next to Serpentstar. The stoic leader looked down at his son, his gaze serious. "The Guardian will watch over him until he can learn to live on his own," he meowed, "and he can make a life, far away from BogClan."
Geckokit looked balefully up at his father, confused on what his parents were discussing. He could tell Quillheart was distraught, but Serpentstar was harder to peg. His father was mysterious, a vast rushing river of wisdom that was near impossible to read.
He let out a faint purr as Serpentstar pressed his nose against his tiny forehead. Without another word, the tom plucked up Geckokit and trotted out of the nursery and into the darkness of the night.
