I had a dream, first one I've had in years. It was a dream about my life, my future. More specifically, our future. I thought about the probability of spending the rest of my life with Bones. I'll admit, it was a good dream, I almost didn't want to wake up. Because the idea of spending the rest of my life peacefully with someone I love is much better than spending another second in this wretched wasteland.
I opened my eyes and saw sunlight, a sweet reminder of how bad humanity fucked up. I slid out of my sleeping bag carefully, as to not wake my sleepy friend. I started towards my bag, I unzipped it, made sure I had my folder, and zipped it back up.
I leaned against the wall while the sunlight continued to flood through the shattered window, dust particles were flying all through the room. I looked down at Bones and decided it was time to get going.
"Bones, come on". I commanded.
To my surprise Bones shot up out of bed faster than I did. He ran over to me and hugged me as tight as his arms could hug. I hugged him back, he was nervous, he was afraid. This was our last shot at saving the world, we've put everything we have on the line, and if we fail… we lose more than just our pride.
I broke from the hug as to not waste any time at all. We grabbed our things, and started towards the cart. Bones ran ahead and put our stuff in the trunk and then plopped into the passenger seat. He was excited, who could blame him? I walked slowly to the cart, these past few days had really taken a toll on me, physically, and mentally.
I made it to the cart and sat down in the driver-seat. I rested my head against the wheel for a moment.
"What's the matter? It the big day! Don't you want things to go back to the way they were?" Bones was concerned for me, I'd been eager all this time.
"Remember…. last night? When we talked about what's gonna happen after this one last adventure?" I asked hesitantly.
"Yeah, you said you didn't know. But it's ok! I'm sure everything will work out in the end!" Bones assured.
I stared at him for a solid 10 seconds. Then I started the cart, and began our final journey. "The Quest For The Last N-Word Pass" is what I called it in my head. I just like the sound of it…
13 minutes of driving later --
We weren't even close to Freedoms End yet, and we were already both bored. I noticed Bones was looking out at the scenery. By scenery I mean sand, cactuses, a tree if you're lucky. The silence finally broke when he looked down to his feet and told me some interesting things.
"Hey… do you remember a couple nights ago when you came home and those guys were um… yknow"
He paused after asking it, he seemed to feel ashamed."Yeah… why?" I asked curiously.
"I um… I uh… we… I was thinkin… uh hehe… um-" He was muttering incoherently at the point, but I knew what he was trying to say.
"Hey calm down… I know what you're going to say… wait till we're done here ok?" I told him.
"WHAT?? PROMISE?" He exclaimed.
"Yes, promise." I replied with a chuckle. I sped up the cart so we could get there faster. Bones seemed to notice and giggled a little bit.
46 more minutes of driving later --
According to the map we were within spitting distance of this place. The closer we drove, the more the desert turned to forestation. The cart started to sputter, I feared this would happen. It chugged us a couple miles closer, but eventually broke down. I got out and opened the hood, a wave of black smoke rolled from the engine into the air. I looked to Bones and he already knew the situation. He walked to the trunk and threw me my bag. He grabbed his and, with a sigh, asked:
"We have to walk now, don't we".
"Yeah, but we were going to anyway. You can't really drive a golf cart through dirt and grass can you?" I said.
"What do you think golf courses are made out of?" He asked sarcastically.
I rolled my eyes and turned towards the path we were driving, I noticed it got narrower and narrower. But we were close, I could feel it. I grabbed the folder from my bag and looked for a map of the area, to my surprise, I found one. The temple… or castle… or ruin or… whatever the hell "Freedoms End" is, was straight ahead. I gestured to Bones to follow me, and, like always, he did as he was told.
