"i heard what you said at the car pound," alyssa mentioned.
"what?" james gulped. i knew exactly what.
"i love you."
she turned her head to him but looked back quickly, he stared at her the whole time.
"i feel the same." james almost choked hearing her say that.
"what? really?" he couldn't believe it.
"yeah," alyssa calmly said.
"i-," he started, "but i need a lot of time," alyssa interrupted. james looked down at his thighs, his fingers that laid on the wooden picnic table slightly shook from being nervous.
"okay," he agreed to her.
alyssa glared back at him, noticing how nervous he was.
"and i owe my mom about ten grand." she smiled. james looked up from his lap to her eyes again.
"okay," he nodded.
"but yeah." alyssa stopped smiling and put her hand on the table next to james's. then she placed it on his, his weird one, but she didn't mind anymore. their fingers wrapped around each other.
i love him, alyssa thought.
"i love you too," james smirked.
"yeah, don't go on about it." they both laughed, staring out at the world in front of their eyes.
the end of the f***ing world
six months later
alyssa: i didn't really believe it was the end of the fucking world.
he wasn't my answer but he kind of was.
he made me happy.
i feel comfortable around him. again.
james was okay with living in his dads house now. i felt bad.
he'd cry a lot.
i still had to owe my mom the money.
i worked extra shifts at a new cafe in the middle of fucking nowhere.
it was basically the same cafe i used to work at.
the whole bonnie incident made it shut down for good.
i don't know what happened to that girl.
she's insane.
alyssa wiped down the wet dishes in the sink, putting them back where they belong. she quietly shut the cabinet.
the bell above the door rang through the empty restaurant, meaning someone must've opened it, it was closing time.
why the fuck would someone come here when it's clearly closing time? alyssa wondered.
she pushed open the wooden swinging door from the kitchen and came into the dining area.
she was surprised to see james.
what the fuck, she thought.
"alyssa," he said, sitting down on one of the stools. "james," she greeted, throwing the dirty rag on the floor. she brushed some of her brown-ginger hair out of her face.
"i talked to bonnie," james stuttered.
"what?" alyssa spoke loud.
"yeah." james moved his still stiff leg in a comfortable position.
