Chapter 2

The ride home was loud and I hated the noisy rain as it came down on our roof. I was woken by someone shaking me gently.

“Huh? Whaaa….t?” My voice came out slurred. The night had turned very dark and I felt like I needed to go to bed.

Nate carried me inside effortlessly and set me on the couch. What was wrong with me? My head hurt like hell but I’m sure Nate was in worse pain. He was the one that had been hit by a car!

I could hear Jacob talking to my sisters who were giggling in the background. Urggh!

“So, tomorrow maybe you can come over and see my skateboard? I could show you some real neat tricks. Oh wait! I can show you this rad clip of me on you tube shredding it on a half pipe!”

My sisters giggled happily. “Sure!” They replied in perfect harmony.

I heard Nate sit down on the floor in front of me and switch on the TV. Neighbours flashed on and I groaned but not out of pain. Nate knew I absolutely hated that show.

“Please! Turn it off!” I begged uselessly.

He turned and grinned devishly. “Why? Don’t you want to find out if Clarissa finally gets together with Tim just as her ex husband Mason comes out of his three month coma?”

It sounded even more ridiculous when Nate said I out loud.

“NO! N…O… I do not want to watch that drool!” I yelped. I would have gotten off the couch and grabbed the remote but I was too tired.

“Well, I am quite intrigued, so you’ll just have to deal with it!” He laughed out loud before turning up the volume.

Halfway into Clarissa’s dramatic speech about how she’s still in love with her ex boyfriend who’s in a coma, I get enough energy to throw a pillow at Nate’s head.

I hit my target and Nate slowly turned his head.

“Did you just throw a pillow at me?” He raised an eyebrow.

I shifted uncomfortably, getting ready to defend myself. “I believe I did”

He kept his eyes on me but I could see his hand creeping slowly towards the pillow on the floor.

“Don’t you dare-“

THWAP! I got a pillow in the side, only just managing to block my head.

This started the pillow wars. I was the best aimer and always hit my target while Nate’s aiming was way off. But he made up for it with relentless firing.

After I got to tired I waved my hand up in the sign of defeat.

“WOOHOO! I win! “ Yelled Nate so loud he got a loud SHSSSH from my mother in the kitchen.

Jacob walked on over to my couch with a look of curiosity on his face.

“Did I miss an epic pillow fight?” He asked a grin beginning on his face.

“Yes, an epic fight which I won!” Nate shook his fist in victory and received a high five from his brother.

“So Amy. You glad Nate’s back? I mean, you talked non stop about him all the time while he was gone” Jacob teased. I laughed and threw a pillow at his head, which he missed easily. Damn.

“You know what’s annoying” I sat up slowly. “You hitting on my sisters 24/7”

Jacob went red and tried to laugh it off. “I do not”

I smiled with a massive grin. I’d found a weak point. “You so do little man”

He went even redder. “Do not”

“Do so”

“Do not”

“Do so”

“Do not!”

That’s when I saw that glint in his eye when he has a bright idea. I had a horrible feeling.

“Yeah, but while you’re all having a go at me, you’re cuddling up next to Nate”

This time it was my time to blush. “He’s my best friend. He’s like my brother! I thought you knew that little man. Tell him Nate” I said looking over at Nate who’d gone awfully quiet.

“Yeah, right” He said quietly.

I turned back to Jacob quite satisfied. “See?”

He laughed and looked between us. “Right”  He walked off muttering something about showing my sisters a you tube clip.

I started laughing and couldn’t stop. It was only when I noticed Nate hadn’t joined in that I stopped.

“Hey, are you alright?” I asked. Maybe he was hurting from the crash. He sure looked hurt.

“I’m fine” He said but he sounded sad. “I’m going to sleep on the blow up mattress k?” He walked off but I saw the way he walked. He was sulking over something.

I snuggled into the couch before sitting back up to yell something over my shoulder.

“Hey Nate, errr…I never really thanked you enough for you know, knocking me out of the way. So thanks” I tried to smile as warmly as I could.

Nate gave me a nod and gave me a smile but it didn’t really reach his eyes.

I sat back down feeling a bit sad. I closed my eyes and started to doze off on the couch. As Nate walked off I thought I heard something he muttered under his breath.

“And I’d do it all again”
