Annabeth knew she hated the new kid from the moment she saw him. His casually tousled black hair and carefree sea-green eyes did not belong in the serious, studious atmosphere of New Rome University. He didn't notice her frosty disdain, instead giving the blond boy in the front row of the lecture hall- Jason, Annabeth knew his name was- a wide grin and a thumbs-up.

Mr. Brunner, the teacher for this particular class, coughed, causing the boy to jump slightly and turn away from his buddy. "Mr. Jackson. Your seat is next to Miss Chase."

"Oh, uh, cool," the boy answered. "Who's Miss Chase, though?"

Annabeth's jaw tightened when he said her name. It was probably stupid, but she knew this was headed for disaster. Why- just why- did the only empty seat have to be next to her?

"Ow!" She hissed at Piper, the girl sitting next to her, who had just driven her elbow into Annabeth's ribs. "What the heck was that for?!"

Piper's multicolored eyes didn't move from where they were trained on the new boy. "Brunner just asked you to raise your hand."

"Wha..?" A quick glance at the teacher confirmed this, and Annabeth turned bright red as one of Piper's friends, Leo, let out a snort of laughter from the seat behind them. "O-oh, sorry."

She was pretty sure her face was still on fire as the boy spotted her (now raised) hand, grinned again (at her, this time) and sauntered over, making himself comfortable in the chair. "The name's Percy. Nice to meetcha."

Annabeth gave him another withering look, purposely ignoring his attempt at an introduction, and turned back to the front. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Percy's friendly face wilt, and get replaced with a bewildered expression.

Piper peeked around Annabeth's shoulders and waved at Percy. "Hi, I'm Piper. This grinch over here is Annabeth. Don't mind her, she's always waspish around new people. She'll warm up to you soon enough."

The grin was back on Percy's face. "Kinda like a dog, huh? Nice to meet you, though."

Annabeth had never been so irritated by a single person before.

"Hey- Annie- wait up!" Piper had to literally sprint through the crowded halls to catch up with her friend.

Annabeth's speed-walk stopped abruptly, and she spun around, now nose-to-nose with Piper. "Don't. Call. Me. Annie."

Piper shrugged, completely unaffected by the hostility. "It was the only way I could get you to stop. And before you escape again- don't deny it! I know you're gonna try. Why were you so mean to that poor new kid? I've never seen you so grouchy before."

"I don't like him."

"Oh wow, I'd never have guessed it. But...why? Percy literally didn't do anything except introduce himself."
