Chapter Sixteen-Silent As Rhinos

“Can we leave yet?”

“No.”

“…Now?”

“No.”

“What about now?”

“No.”

“…And now?”

The hand on the clock moves an inch. “Now we can leave.”

Harley grins and jumps up, running over to her bag. The room is still really dark, along with the outside. It’s four in the morning and everybody in the village is still asleep. All except for us two. It’s as silent as a mouse.

Actually, mice aren’t that quiet.

They squeak, don’t they?

I think rhinos are quiet.

Why?

Because rhinos don’t make any noise.

A coo goes ‘moo’, a cat goes ‘meow’, and a mouse goes ‘squeak‘.

Rhinos?

Silent.

Ha. Take that.

Instead of saying ‘as silent as a mouse’, I’m going to say ‘as silent as a rhino’.

Oh yeah.

I did it.

What now?

“What time does the ship leave again?”

My eyes snap over to Harley. “What?”

She sends me a wry look, hoisting the bag over her shoulder. Rita gave us a black zipper bag so Harley didn’t have to carry a heavy suitcase with her. “The ship, Bart.”

“Oh! It leaves at five. We got a good hour,” I reply, standing up from the bed.

She pauses and looks over at me. “What do you mean by ‘we’?”

“I mean you and me. Harley and Bart.”

“Bart, I told you already, you can’t come with me.”

“And I told you already, I don’t care.”

Harley sighs irritably, running a hand through her blonde wisps. “Bart, if you get involved with this, you might end up dead. Understand? I might even end up dead. It’s highly likely we will both die.”
