Chapter Ten

When we get back, I unbutton my rain-soaked shirt so I'm just in my black tank top and grey trousers.
I go and sit against the wall next to Blink.
"What did you do?" He asks
"What do you mean?" I reply confused
"With Spot."
"Oh. I- I shoved him away. Don't worry, Blink. Nothing happened."
"Okay."
He gives me a tight hug, and then gets up to talk to Jack.
Crutchie is the next to sit by me.
"Aye, Brooklyn." He smiles.
This is weird.
Crutchie hasn't talked to me- just me alone- in a while.
"Hey, Crutchie. What's up?" I smile back
He shrugs.
"I heard what happened. With Spot." He sighs
"Oh that. It's nothing. Honest." I reply
"Okay. Hey, thanks for saving me the other day at the refuge."
"No problem. You're like family." I answer, patting his shoulder.
He smiles and gives me a light hug.
I smile and hug him back.
"Hey, where's Spritz?" I ask
"I don't know. The last time I saw her, was earlier today." He responds
"Hmm.."
Blink comes back with a worried face.
"What's wrong?" I ask concerned
He pulls me up my my hand and whispers "we've got a problem."
I look over at Crutchie
"I'll be right back." I say, and Blink leads me outside.
"What's going on, Blink?"
"It's Spritz." He sighs
"She's not in the refuge is she??" I ask frantically
"No. It's much worse."
Oh no.
"What could possibly be worse than-"
"Brooklyn, they're putting her on the orphan train tomorrow." He says softly
"But she's not an orphan.."
"I know that. But they don't."
"Where is she?" I ask again
He shrugs "I don't know."

We have to save her.
It's now or never.
"Should we tell Crutchie?" I ask
"I think this is a battle we should fight on our own. We don't want anyone else in trouble." He answers
I nod.
We saunter back in the lodge.
Everyone looks confused
"What's going on, guys?" Race asks
I glance over at Blinl, who says,
"It's nothing. We're just going to-- go to Brooklyn for a bit. Talk to Spot about something.
Everyone mutters
"Okay."
And we're out the door.
