"Life is not the amount of breaths you take. It's the moments that take your breath away."
–Alex Hitchens | from „Hitch"

"Do you believe in soulmates?" Mrs. Bradley looked into her communication class and crossed her arms.

„Soulmates? I think they exist. Just not always romantically." Montgomery de la Cruz shrugged his shoulders. The fact that he said anything at all, surprised not only the class teacher but also the students. Especially one student, Lara Lane.

„I think there are certain people you'll meet in your life who just connect with you more than anyone else and you just know it isn't a typical thing." Lara murmured in her soft voice and turned to Montgomery, who was sitting right behind her.

„And this person wont necessarily be your ‚significant other'. They could be your best friend, your mother or the person you're dating or whoever", Montgomery continued, leaning slightly forward towards the girl.

„It could be anyone who has ever interacted with you." Both stared into each other's eyes and forgot for a moment that everyone in the room was watching them.

"That shit doesn't exist. Everyone breaks up in the end anyway." A boy with black hair and pale skin broke the silence.

„Bullshit. My soulmate and big love is my team, and baseball." Montgomery grinned, leaned back in his chair and winked at Lara. The brown-haired girl with the beautiful dark eyes, laughed slightly and turned back to Mrs. Bradley.

Lara took a quick look at Clay Jensen, who was sitting right across from her. He was broken, lost and totally left behind in his own world. And she knew why. Everyone knew why.
Sighing, she turned to her school block and scribbled on it. The death of her former friend Hannah was still deep in her bones.

".. soo okay, guys, that's it for today. Next time we will focus on this topic. You can pack up your things." Mrs. Bradley took her coffee cup from the desk and disappeared from the classroom and so did the students of Liberty High one after the other.

One of the first was Clay Jensen, who threw his stuff into his backpack and almost „ran away" from class.

A large, broad figure cast a shadow on Lara's table and she turned her gaze away from her block and looked up.

„You're quiet today. Is everything okay?" Montgomery leaned against the table that was behind him.

„Not in the mood, that's all.."

„Maybe I can cheer you up tonight -„ with a quick glance around the classroom, Montgomery made sure there was no one else in the room.

With slow steps he came towards her and spread gentle kisses on her neck. „ I'm sure you'll feel better afterwards."

She closed her eyes and enjoyed his kisses on her skin. „Maybe you should do that." Her mouth curved into a smile.

He licked his lips and pushed himself off her table, only to be standing in front of the class door the next moment.

„Monty, you coming?" Bryce Walker stuck his head through the door frame and started grinning.

„Go on, your babysitter is waiting for you, little Mont." She laughed and packed her books.

Lara didn't understand why Montgomery was friends with guys like Bryce Walker, he could do so much better.

When he was somewhere between piss drunk and emotional drunk after some of Bryce's party's, he would let her in. Montgomery would finally let her see what makes his world spin. And for him that was a wall. Not just any wall. A wall filled in his handwriting - filled with his words and his feelings.

There were quotes, stories, dreams, hopes. All the inner workings of his mind were captured on this wall. He would smile and lean on Lara as they stared at this masterpiece. It was breathtaking. It was him. Undeniably him.

He would giggle and turn to her and place his finger sloppily against her lips - and all Lara could think about is what it would feel like to kiss his hands - feels his soft skin against her lips.

But then he said, „You can't tell anyone. This will be our secret." His voice was so quite and she realized how still the whole world felt.

Their breath became the same. Their heart in sync. And that's when. That's when she knew, he was totally different to the otherwise hotheaded Montgomery de la Cruz everyone knows.
