Chapter 5

The next morning, Alayna walked into the school with her brother. The first thing they did was go over to the call board. They looked at who got callbacks. The paper read, Ryan and Sharpay Evans, Alayna Bolton and Ryan Evans, and Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez. "Congrats sis." Troy said.

"Did you guys audition?" Alayna asked.

"It was kind of an accident." Troy said. "Gabriella said she wanted to audition and I said I would audition with her, but Ms. Darbus wouldn't let us. As Kelsi was getting up, she tripped and we helped her. She showed us how the song was supposed to be. After we finished singing, Ms. Darbus told us we had a callback." Alayna nodded. "I'll see you later." Troy said. "Congrats again."

"You too." Alayna said. Troy walked down the hall. Alayna saw Ashley on a bench and went over to her.

"So, did you get a callback?" She asked.

"Yeah." Alayna said.

"That's great, Alayna." Ashley said as she hugged her. "I'm so happy for you."

"Thanks." Alayna said.

All of a sudden, they heard Sharpay. "Callback!" They heard her say loudly. They looked over at the call board and saw Ryan and Sharpay. "But they didn't even audition." Sharpay said. "And you didn't audition with Alayna."

"Actually, I did audition with Alayna." Ryan said.

"When?" Sharpay asked.

"Before our audition." Ryan replied.

"Is this a joke?" Sharpay asked. "We have to do something to stop them."

"Please don't ruin this for Alayna." Ryan said.

"Oh. Are you worried about your crush?" Sharpay asked. Ryan looked at his sister. "You don't think I haven't noticed?" Sharpay asked. "I've seen you talking with her. And I heard you singing with her yesterday before the audition." "Listen Ryan. You have to get over this little crush on Alayna." She continued. "She's a jock and you're a theatre kid. She doesn't mix in with us."

"What's wrong." Chad said as him and some of the other basketball players came up to her. Ryan sighed. He saw Alayna and went over to her.

"Congratulations, Alayna." He said.

"Thank you." Alayna said.

"I'll let you two talk." Ashley said. "I'll see you in home room, Alayna." Ashley headed down the hallway. Alayna looked at Ryan.

"I'm guessing you heard what Sharpay said." Ryan said.

"She was pretty loud." Alayna said. "What is she going to do?"

"I don't know, but I won't let her ruin your callback." Ryan said. "You deserved this."

"Thanks Ryan." Alayna said.

"I'll get the sheet music for our callback from Kelsi and give it to you later." Ryan said. "We can meet up at lunch and we can talk about when we work on the song."

"Won't Sharpay see us?" Alayna said.

"Oh right." Ryan said. "We can talk during free period in the music room."

"Ok." Alayna said.

"I'll see you later." Ryan said. Alayna nodded before heading to her home room.

At lunch, Alayna grabbed a tray of food and went over to where Ashley and the rest of the volleyball team was. "Hey guys." She said as she joined them.

"Hey Alayna." Everyone greeted her.

"So, what did Ryan say other than to congratulate you?" Ashley asked.

"Nothing much." Alayna said. "Just talking about when we're going to meet up to work on the song. We're meeting in the music room during free period to talk about it."

"What about Sharpay?" Ashley asked.

"Ryan said he wouldn't let her ruin this for me, but we both know how Sharpay is." Alayna said. "She would do anything to make sure me, Troy, and Gabriella stayed out of the drama club."

"Yeah." Ashley said.

As they continued to eat, they heard Gabriella and Taylor talking as they walked by the table. "Why is everyone staring at you?" Gabriella asked.

"They're not staring at you." Taylor said. "Not me."

"Because of the callback?" Gabriella asked. "I really can't have people staring at me." Just then, Gabriella wasn't paying attention and she slipped on something. Her ended up going all over Sharpay. Sharpay screamed and the entire cafeteria went silent. "Oh my god. I'm so sorry." Gabriella said as she tried to wipe the food off of Sharpay.

"Get off me!" Sharpay said.

"What's going on here?" Ms. Darbus asked.

"That Gabriella girl just dumped their lunch all over me on purpose." Sharpay said. "And Troy, his little sister, and his basketball robots are obviously in on it."

"Leave Alayna out of this." Ryan said.

"Why do you think they auditioned?" Sharpay said. "It's all their plan to ruin the musical." Sharpay then stormed off. Alayna and Ashley couldn't help but start laughing at Sharpay's appearance. Alayna saw Ryan looking in her direction as he followed his sister.

When lunch ended, Alayna and Ashley went to throw their trash away. "See you at volleyball practice, Ash." Alayna said.

"Have fun with Ryan." Ashley said. Alayna walked out of the cafeteria and headed to the music room. She walked into the room and saw Ryan.

"Hey." He greeted her.

"Hey." Alayna said.

"I'm sorry about my sister accusing you in lunch." Ryan said.

"It's ok." Alayna said. "Thank you for sticking up for me."

"Oh. You're welcome." Ryan said, nervously. "It was no big deal."

"So, do you have the sheet music?" Alayna asked.

"Yeah. Check it out." Ryan said. Alayna went over to Ryan. "The song we're singing from the show is called. "I Can't My Eyes Off of You."" Ryan said.

"That sounds like it's romantic." Alayna said.

"It doesn't have to be." Ryan said. "It's just a song." Alayna nodded. "So, for the week, we can meet during lunch, free period, and before and after school." Ryan said. "And we can schedule times to work with Kelsi."

"I'm good with anything." Alayna said. "I just can't do anytime during volleyball practice."

"That's completely fine." Ryan said. "What time is practice?"

"Everyday from 2:30 to 3:30." Alayna replied.

"Ok." Ryan said. "So, do you want to work on some of the song now?"

"I can't." Alayna said. "I was planning on working on homework during free period."

"Ok." Ryan said. "Here's a copy of the song and here are mine and Kelsi's numbers."

Alayna took the sheet music and the slips of paper with the numbers on them. "Here's my number." Alayna said, writing her number down.

"Thanks." Ryan said.

"See ya." Alayna said as she walked out of the room. She headed to study hall for the rest of free period.
