CHAPTER 3: HOME AT BLAST
Looking at how so much had changed over the last few months since she was home got her overwhelmed. The streets were broader, few flyovers had been newly constructed. She noticed a lot of campaign posters hung all over the street which in her opinion made the walls look dirty..."Those scums with fake old promises"..... She thought, referring to the politicians with bold fake promises who only know the importance of the masses during election.
She particularly wasn't a fan of politics, never had been. As the car drove fast into the free streets and it made her think of Lagos, the ever jam packed streets, the hours of hold up pill up and all that smoke of exhaust pipe in the air. Kano had newly adopted the road side sellers thing, a borrowed act from Lagos, while at-least they aren't begging.
The pounding of her heart in her chest kept her in loop with her reality. What she would meet at home, why her mother had called her last week asking her when she would be coming home. She couldn't help but think what it would be about. Her biggest fear was her father telling her to quit her job and come back home, for one reason or the other. The car swirled into the large compound majestically. The maid Hafsatu ran out and hugged Fatimah, helping her take her luggage out of the car.
"Where is Maama?".....Fatimah asked Hafsatu smiling.
"up in the kitchen making your favourite breakfast".Fatimah ran into the house as fast as her average feet could carry her. Everything in the parlor looked the same to her. Same color of walls, same chairs but with a different set of curtains, darker ones. The 65 inches plasma which was on the wall had been removed, it sat gorgeously on the tv stand just how she liked it.... "Maama finally took my advice huh".
The aroma of the fish sauce Hajiya Rabiah was making filled the entire house. Fatimah ran to the kitchen and hugged her mother from behind.....
"Awwww welcome home sweetheart".
"Thank you Maama, i haven't even tasted it yet, but u know it'd be lovely...i have missed your cooking so much".....Fatimah said hugging her mother tighter.
"Go change, and come have some food, you look great but pale and weak from all that junk and fast food you have been consuming".Fatimah laughed and walked away. She ran to her room and couldn't help but notice how sparkling it was. Everything was same except for the curtains and the centre carpet. She could smell Izal, probably from the toilet. She brushed her hands through the soft new duvet on her bed and sighed with relief and satisfaction, of being home.
**********************************************
After Lunch and a quick nap, Fatimah woke up to the sound of her father's car, honking its way into the compound, it was 6 in the evening...She ran down the stairs, and watched her Father's driver bring in his laptop bag and a few other office files and dropped on the table. She paused immediately she sighted him as she wasn't wearing any hijab. He looked at her direction and lowered his gaze.... "Welcome home Miss Jadah".....The elderly man probably in his late 40s said. She smiled slowly and nodded without uttering a word.
She could hear her father's voice thanking his driver as he exited the building and watched in anticipation as her father entered the parlor.
"Abhi".....She said running towards him and giving him a hug.... "You are too old to be hugging me, don't you think?".....Alhaji Jadah said with a slight frown and then smiled broadly."You look pale, too much work?"
"Trying to make you proud Abhi"..
"Why don't i rest, and by tomorrow we would talk more, its maghrib now"..... Alhaji Jadaah said and walked to his parlor, leaving her wondering why he looked so serious while making his last statement.A million things kept running through her head as she wondered what her father would possibly want to discuss with her that he had to mention it to her before she had allowed her to be home for even a day.
