There was a great difference between extraordinary and extra-ordinary.
Extraordinary was something magnificent. Something that sparkled and shined and made itself known to the world. Someone like a queen or a princess.
Extra-ordinary was the opposite. It was something that was normal and boring. It wasn't anything special. It was something you still wouldn't notice after looking thrice.
That's what Lilac was. Extra-ordinary. Boring. Especially her looks. She had bland, brown hair and pale skin. She wasn't very short, but she wasn't very tall either. Her figure was very stickish- she didn't have the curviest curves in the world. Lilac's eyes were green. A dark, earthy green. She was nothing remarkable.
The trees told her she was remarkable, though.
She didn't believe it.
If Lilac was truly remarkable, then her parents would give her more attention. Then they would notice when she was gone for days.
If Lilac were remarkable, she would have more friends. She would have more people she could trust. People, not plants and animals in her forest.
She didn't tell the trees her doubts, though. Lilac loved the trees, and she didn't want them to get mad at her.
That's what Lilac was afraid of as she hurried to The Oak, one of her greatest friends. She had felt a great surge of anger in the forest when she was talking to the orchids this morning. Lilac was terribly terrified that she had messed up somehow and that The Oak was mad at her and that it would leave her.
Lilac reached The Oak out of breath with tears in her eyes. The Oak looked down at her, "Why are you upset, child?" The Oak asked in her old, sweet voice, "What has happened?"
Lilac looked up into The Oak's face. She didn't see the anger or disappointment that she was expecting. Instead, Lilac saw kindness and concern in her branches. Lilac sighed in relief. Everything was fine.
"Nothing has happened," Lilac answered, her soft voice quiet.
The Oam gave her a skeptical look, but did not voice her suspicion. "I assume you are here because you felt the anger in the air?"
Lilac nodded, "Yes, I thought that you were mad at me."
The Oak smiled, "For what? You have been nothing but sweet, my sapling. You have never done anything wrong."
Lilac smiled back, "What was it then?"
"The Forest Nymphs," The Oak's smile was replaced with a frown as she sighed, "Some poor soul has angered them."
Lilac's smile faded. The nymphs had short tempers, and would not hesitate to hurt someone over the slightest things.
Lilac walked over to the river. The Oak stood alone, unlike the other trees that clustered together. She stood near a cliff with a raging waterfall that faded into a calm river. The nymphs' burrow was up there somewhere, only a couple hours from the elven village.
'Oh that poor person, dealing with angry nymphs while I'm over here getting worked up about what? Disappointment? I'm so self-'
"Oh my!" The Oak exclaimed, her face turned towards the cliff.
Lilac looked that way. She didn't know what she was expecting to see.
But she did know that she was definitely not expecting to see a girl falling from the sky.
