Y/n woke up before everyone else like any other day but she felt the lump in her throat and the heaviness in her heart. She'd never really felt guilty except for hurting Draco when they were little, but she felt it now. It clouded her mind, taking every step more carefully than usual trying not to act differently. She knew she was different though, the mark said it all, she was a horrible vile person. Although the slight changes she knew from last year were making their way back to the surface, Draco was even more considerate towards everyone.
When Draco woke up Y/n got off the couch and hooked her arm through his as they made their way to breakfast as one of the few there. They ate in silence not really knowing what to say to the other. They knew the other was hurt in most of the same ways but they didn't know how to help. When they finished they still had a while till their first class so they walked around for a while avoiding what they should really be doing.
" We should make a schedule of when we go," Y/n said as they walked in the courtyard. Draco nodded not looking at his sister, he didn't think he could bear it to see her face. She was the strong one of the two, always has been, but even she was hurting because of this.
" Yeah, alternate days or alternate after classes?" Draco asked trying to keep his voice calm and steady.
" We need to figure out our schedules and mark it there," Y/n said and they sat down at one of the benches taking out their schedules and comparing them. They only had a couple of classes together. They marked in each schedule with just their initials in between free periods and breaks deciding they could go at mealtimes together.
The twins were in one of the few classes they shared, potions with Professor Slughorn. The class was moved to the back with some cauldrons with them. Y/n and Draco were close together as usual but to them, something was always going to be different. Y/n hated the fact that their relationship was strained now, not because of anything like a fight but because of the upcoming task they would have to do. The door opened causing Y/n's head to snap up and look at it to see Harry and Ron.
" Ah, Harry my boy," Slughorn said as he saw them. " Was beginning to worry, brought someone with you I see."
" Ron Weasley sir," Ron started standing up straight and Y/n noticed Lavender brown, a Gryffindor girl was looking at him with lovey-dovey eyes. Y/n wanted to be sick but also punch the girl, she didn't understand the second one. " I'm a menace actually so I'm probably just going to go." He started backing up but Harry stopped him from leaving. Y/n almost smiled at the look of dismay on his face. What was wrong with her?
" Nonsense we'll sort you out, any friend of Harry's is a friend of mine. Get your books out," Slughorn said with the annoying smile never leaving his face.
" Sorry sir I haven't actually got my books, neither has Ron," Harry told him.
" Not to worry get what you want from the cupboards," Slughorn said waving his hand. Y/n was no longer listening to what the professor was saying but at the two boys who had begun to fight over a book. Her eyes held a slight hint of amusement but her face showed nothing. As Ron came back with a triumphant grin on his face they made eye contact again. She smirked slightly before turning to her brother. Ron smiled slightly before realising he was smiling at a Slytherin no less a Malfoy.
Hermione stepped hesitantly away from the cauldron as she explained what Amortatia was and what she had smelled. As Slughorn explained that it was a very strong potion and the effects the girls started going towards it. Y/n rolled her eyes looking at the Lavender girl before her eyes met with Ron's. The girl rolled her eyes at him but he smiled anyway making the girl want to smile although she didn't know why. As Slughorn said it was dangerous and closed the lid all the girls stepped back in dismay.
Liquid luck, the potion Slughorn now held making the twin's heads perk up. It could help them to either please the dark lord, or their father in Draco's case or defeat them once and for all. They had to brew living death in order to get it. The twins worked hard to get it both wanting it for different reasons. Ron was trying hard to focus but he couldn't his eyes kept making their way to Y/n. She was so concentrated in making the potion and he found it oddly cute. He shook his head, he can't like a Slytherin it's wrong. Y/n looked up once to see Ron frustrated about not being able to cut the bean. She felt her lips tug in a smile but forced herself to work and managed to not look up any more.
After many mishaps during the process, including Seamus managing to blow it up and Crabbe melting his spoon. Now they all stood behind a desk with harry and Slughorn on the other side. Draco and Y/n were mad, how come everything Harry did was perfect? They needed that, not him he was the chosen one. They were the ones without a choice. The twins made their way out of the class and split up to go to different classes. Draco had a free period so he was going to go to the cabinet and it worried the girl. When she got out of class she went straight to the room of requirements to see what Draco has accomplished. He was standing in front of it before he turned around.
"Didn't get that far," he mumbled and she nodded.
" We have time Draco," She tried to comfort and he nodded. She hugged him tightly wanting this to be over. " We'll get through this Draco I promise." Draco hugged her shaking. They were both scared and they didn't know how it was going to end. They wanted to keep each other safe but they also needed to do this to keep their mum safe.
" if that damn Potter didn't take the liquid luck," He sighed but Y/n pulled away.
" Draco please stop your dumb feud! It's stupid we have more important things to do so grow up and stop your stupid obsession with Potter! I swear Draco It's like you love him! Seriously Draco stop acting like a little school girl and focus on the task at hand!" She yelled making Draco flinch at the harshness of her voice.
" Y/n I'll try harder-" He started to apologise but Y/n cut him off.
" Draco you've said that so many times and it's never true! You said you wouldn't blindly follow father so I wouldn't have to save you and look where we are! I'm so done with you being so childish and wanting to please him when you know he doesn't care! We're pawns to him! Just things to make him closer to the Dark Lord!" Draco was shocked at his sister's words but even more so at the tears welling up in her eyes. He hadn't seen her cry in years but this was going to set it off.
She didn't show up for dinner that night which worried Draco but Pansy assured him that she was just sulking in their room. Draco nodded feeling a pit in his stomach as he thought all of this was his fault. No, it was his fault. He knew that she wouldn't let him do this alone and would get the mark even though she didn't want it.
That night neither of the Mafloy kids slept for different reasons. Draco had felt guilty for what he did to his sister, the only person who was always there for him. Y/n was scared, she was scared of herself and what she had to do. She didn't think she'd be able to do it but she couldn't let Draco do it.
