i'm back
Awsten and Charlotte are startled from their bubble some time later by a buzz on the table.
Reflexively, Awsten averts his eyes to check the notification. Her phone is still on his side of the table, locked and just barely out of reach, and it has been a struggle for him to ignore its looming presence. The message is from somebody named Ricki, which Awsten immediately assumes is a girl because the only Ricki he knows is from H2O (not that he knows anything about H2O), and her message is in all caps, "U HAVE WORK IN 30 N UR STILL NOT BACK W MY COFFEE DID U D..." The preview cuts off, and Charlotte groans moodily, plucking her phone off the table and then groaning even louder, sliding down into her chair with a deep frown.
"I forgot I told my roommate I'd bring her a drink before my shift," she says apologetically, then flushes a little. "Honestly, I forgot I had a shift at all."
"Will you be late?" Awsten asks, feeling sorry he distracted her for so long.
"Definitely," she laughs, gathering her drink and her purse, "but I'm not worried. I'm a manager anyway."
She walks over to him, then outstretches a hand with just a tiny corner of her mouth upturned. He reaches out to shake it, his palm way too sweaty for her not to notice. "It was a pleasure to see you again. You are very... distracting, Mr, Knight."
With that, she jets out the door. If an angel gains its wings every time a bell rings, the jingle of the one above the door that signals her departure is enough to have Awsten floating peacefully above the clouds. He sips his coffee in bliss.

i ran out so fast i forgot to get her coffee so i'm in the drive thru rn LMFAOO i hate it here
Awsten cackles.
It's just under an hour before she texts him again. Awsten had finally given up on getting anything productive done at Starbucks, and had migrated back home to pet his cat and stare at his laptop some more. While earlier he had felt so inspired, right now all he could think about was blank walls and blank floors and blank ceilings. And he is absolutely certain it has nothing to do with the reinforced emotional block he had placed over a very specific section of his mind, the part that starts with 'Ch' and rhymes with 'harlot.'
There was nothing to even block, really. They had just spent hours talking, shared some laughs, and were on their way to forming a beautiful friendship. If Awsten's brain could just chillax for one sec, if he could just let loose the indescribable tension in his head and shoulders and heart, if he just had normal emotions for a day, all of this would be a lot easier. There wouldn't even be a this. Whatever this even was. Maybe it doesn't exist anywhere but Awsten's head! But still, a small part of his brain wonders 'what if?' And that small part is a lot bigger than a small part.
