Metal... Cold metal. That's the first thing that came to mind when the boy jolted awake. Cold darkness and stale, dusty air surrounded him. He backed up into a corner and waited for his eyes to adjust. The room jerked making the boy's stomach lurch.
He couldn't remember anything, not even his name. He could remember things about the world but nothing about his own life. He could see people but had no recognition of who they were. Nothing about him was in his head.
He slowly got up and tried to find a way out. He was greeted with only cold metal. All around him. He started to get frantic, he tried to call out for help but nothing came out of his mouth. His voice, one he can't even remember was gone.
He started to bang the walls trying to break free. The cage jerked and made him fall forwards. He broke the fall but his right wrist collapsed. He silently cried out in pain. Then he remembered,
My name.. My name is Alex. He also remember something else but he didn't know what to think about it.
With another jerk, it suddenly got cold. Alex had a sweatshirt on so he pulled the hood over his head. The room continued its long ascent. Alex holds his wrist in pain and try's to calm down. He takes deep breaths and his fear turns into an intense curiosity. He wants to know where he was going and what was happening.
It felt like eternity, being in the room but Alex somehow knew it had only been about half an hour. Alex huddles in a corner, trying to remember something other than his name, but nothing comes. Suddenly, with a groan and a bang, the rising room stopped; the sudden change threw Alex across the room with a jolt. Landing in his wrist again, Alex winces in pain and quickly scrambles to his feet.
Alex felt the room sway less and less until it finally stilled and everything was silent. He looks around for some kind of way out and pound on the walls with his good hand. Nothing was there, nothing but the cool metal and darkness. Minuets went by and there was nothing Alex could do. He sat against the wall and crosses his legs. There was no point in banging and he couldn't shout, so the next best option... wait.
There was a loud bang above him and he sucked in a startled breath as he looked up. Alex watched a straight line of light appeared across the ceiling and expand. There was a heavy grating sound that revealed double sliding doors being forced open. Alex has to shield his eyes with both of his hand because the light pierces his eyes from being in the dark for so long. Wincing when he threw his right hand up to fast.
Above he heard noises ... to be exact -- voices -- and he became a little afraid.
"Take a look at that shank."
"How old do you think he is?"
"Why does the shank have a hoodie?'
"Hope you enjoyed the one-way trip, Greenie."
"There ain't no going back, bro."
"Dude, what is that smell?"
Alex was hit with confusion and panic. The voices were weird and he didn't understand some of the words. Alex forced his eyes to look up toward the light and the voices, but he couldn't make out anything, just blurs at first. Then they became bodies - people lookin down into the room, pointing at him.
And then, the faces cleared up like a camera lens focused. Boys, they were all boys. Boys of all ages, young and older. Seeing the faces, made some of Alex's fear go away and was replaced with confusion. What where all these teenagers and kids doing here?
A rope with a big lope tied on the end, was lowered from above. Hesitating, Alex stepped into it with his left foot and held on. He was yanked up, hands... lots of hands reached down and helped him up. The world expanded and seamed to spin a little. Alex had a swirl of emotions, along with the the mix of faces and light. The voices around him grew quiet and Alex knew he would never forget the words he heard when he was yanked over the sharp edge of box.
"Welcome to the Glade, shank," the boy said, "Nice to meet ya."
