Sunday morning. I'm pulled out of my sleep by the sound of my phone buzzing, letting me know I received a new message. I pat the nightstand blindly until my hands come in contact with the cold material of my phone and I finally open my eyes. One new message from Mom: "Your dad and I are at the farmers market, and we found that marmalade you were talking about the other day. Should we get you some?". Ugh, gotta love being woken up by such an important text. I quickly answer mom before rolling over to face Jay who's starting to emerge from his sleep, and the memories of last night come rushing back to me at the sight of his black eye. How did things go out of control like that? I know we all had too much to drink, but that's not an excuse for Brad's behaviour. I move closer to Jay until our faces are only a few inches from each other and place my hand on his cheek, careful not to put any pressure on his bruise. He winces at the contact of my hand, and slowly opens his eyes.
"Morning sleepy head", I say, removing my hand by fear to be hurting him. It does look painful; Brad didn't go easy on him.
"Hey, beautiful", he answers with a smile before placing a kiss on the tip of my nose.
"Is it painful?", I ask haltingly, staring at his bruised cheekbone. I feel awful. If it wasn't for me, Jay wouldn't have gone to that stupid double date, and he wouldn't display a black eye today.
"Nah", he answers, giving me a reassuring smile. But I know him too well to not know that wasn't true.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have accepted to go on that double date. I knew it was a bad idea".
"You're not responsible for his actions you know", Jay answers. "He's his own man".
"I know but...", I start to say before Jay cut me off.
"He's a dick, there's nothing you can do about it. But I do hope you're finally gonna stop making me hang out with him".
And there go my dreams of having them get along. There's no chance I can have them in the same room ever again. Why can't they behave like normal people?
"I think that's be for the best", I answer before placing a kiss on his lips. I proceed to get out of bed and grab one of his hoodies from the floor before putting it on, covering my half naked body.
"I'm starving", I say, tying my hair up in a ponytail. "Wanna grab something to eat before we go ice skating?"
"Fuck, I forgot to tell you, didn't I?" he asks, passing his hand on his forehead.
"Apparently", I answer, knowing he was about to cancel our plans for the day.
"I'm sorry, baby", he answers as he sits up on the bed. "We got called in for practice today. Can we postpone?", he adds before getting out of bed and comes towards me. "I promise I'll take you ice skating when I'm back from the game next week", he says, wrapping his arms around my waist.
"But I really wanted to go today", I answer with a pout.
"Oh come on Em, stop it with the puppy eyes. You know they break my heart every time".
"Well then, let's go ice skating and I'll stop", I say, giving him my most innocent smile.
"I wish, baby", he says before kissing me. "But I can't skip practice, you know that", he adds as he detaches himself from me and walks to the nightstand to grab his phone before coming back to me. "But I'll see you tonight. I should be back by nine". I roll my eyes at him and the idea of spending the day by myself, and let myself drop on the bed.
"Fine, abandon me. I get it, you like your balls more than me", I say, grabbing my phone and lying back on my back. I don't have time to unlock my phone that Jay's lying on top of me.
