Silently I open the door; everyone else is still in the dining room.
I quietly step out into the hallway and to the front door, then I carefully step over the mat. The large step makes me wince in pain. I limp to the steps and sit down on the top one. I reach into my pocket grabbing my lighter and cigarettes. My hands shake subtlety as I light it. Holding it in my mouth I hop down from the steps and hobble over to a rock to the right of the house. I sit down on it and grunt in pain.
I sit there for a few minutes when I hear the door open. Michael steps out looking pissed, he looks around and spots me. He walks to the end of the porch, climbs over the railing and jumps to the ground. Sitting on the rock beside me he sighs and rubs his face. I offer him a cigarette from my slowly depleting pack and, looking up, he accepts. Pulling out my lighter I flick it on letting him light his cig. We lock eyes for a moment and a strange sort of understanding shone in his eyes. I put away the lighter and stay quiet for a moment.
"What's going to happen now?" I say quietly.
I look over at him, he has a pained expression on his face.
"I-I don't know. But what I do know... nothing is going to happen to you, I— we'll make sure of that."
He looks up and I smile gratefully at him, he smiles back but still he looks worried.
I take out the cigarette from my mouth and stare down at it.
"I should really stop smoking."
I really should, I normally do it to relax and when I'm stressed but I needed to kick the habit before it turned into something worse. With a sudden resolve I drop the cigarette and put it out under my foot. Then I stand and fling the box into the trees behind the house. The box flies farther than I thought was possible and I gaze in disbelief as it soars up over the trees and out of sight.
"Holy shit," Michael mutters. I turn to him he's gaping in the direction I threw the box. Then he looks at his own cigarette butt and drops it guiltily.
He clears his throat, "We should go back inside."
It took me a moment to answer, "...yeah-yeah, inside..."
I slowly start to move towards the stairs, with Michael beside me. As we slowly continue I find my eyes being drawn to him; I quickly look away when he looks down at me. Once we reach the stairs he helps me up them and I utter a small "Thank you."
"Yeah."
I stop and he halts beside me.
"...I'm scared. What if I really am a-a monster," I look up at him, "will you and Ty have to... kill me?"
The look on his face morphs from shock to fear then, "No. You are not a monster. You will never— could never be a monster." I could see the resolve on his face as well as hear it in his voice.
"It will never come to that, you hear me?" He grips my shoulders firmly, "Never."
I feel the tension fade from my body, "Thank you," I say quietly.
Those simple words of assurance were all I needed to hear; exactly what I needed to hear in fact.
"Uh yeah, sure anytime," he pauses then clears his throat, removing his hands from my shoulders. "We should head inside."
"Oh, yeah, we should. After you."
"Thanks."
We walk inside one after the other, with me slightly behind.
"—They're just a kid!"
That's Henry.
"Well that kid is dangerous!"
And that, is Trauler.
They're talking about me. I feel uncomfortable and I unconsciously move closer to Michael. As we enter the dining room I feel my gaze shift to the floorboards, not wanting to look at either man.
They stop talking when we enter and I glance up as Ty rushes over. He quickly starts to fuss over me, "Are you alright, you don't look so good."
He puts his hand to my forehead, checking for a fever.
"Ty! I'm okay," I gently push him off me.
"Alex, I'm so sorry about that," Henry apologizes.
I open my mouth to say something but I'm cut off by Trauler.
"Enough with the touchy-feely shit, do you realize how huge this is?"
"Griffin, what the hell are you talking about?"
"I'm saying we have no idea what it can do—"
"Excuse me," Tyler interrupts, "what did you call them!?"
Michael steps menacingly towards Trauler, "Alex is not an it. They're a human being!"
Trauler scoffs, "Human my ass, no human would react to holy water that way."
I see both boys ball their hands into fists. I grab their arms and yank them back, hard.
"Start a fight and I will personally waterboard the both of you," I growl.
"I appreciate the help, but he's right about one thing, we have no idea what I can do. That makes me dangerous."
Trauler throws his hands in the air in exasperation, "At least one of you has sense."
