Chapter 13

It was time for dessert,the maids brought some vanilla cake and fruit salad as their dessert,while eating,Mr Howard received a phone and excused himself from the table since it was an important call,then Rebecca began

"Tell me. Um. What's your name again?..."

Derek placed his hand on Michelle's thigh,he knew his mom was up to no good,he wanted Michelle to know that he was right beside her and was sorry for whatever his mom was about to say. Michelle knew Derek was trying to make her feel calm but it was hard as her heart was beating faster than normal because Rebecca always had something new and hurtful to throw at her

"...Michelle. Yes Michelle..." She continued

"What is it you truly want from my son?... Because as far as I know,gold diggers like you don't usually spend too much of their time sticking with one man... I need to know what it is exactly you want. I'll give it to you on a platter of gold,no matter the cost,so you can leave my son alone"

Michelle felt humiliated,her heartbeat stopped at that moment,it was like everything was a blur,she couldn't hold her tears anymore,she wasn't strong enough,this was too much

"Mom, would you stop this?! I've had enough!" Nathan yelled,standing up from his chair and storming out of the dinning room

Derek angrily stood up from his chair and took Michelle away from his mom's presence,he took her outside so she could get some fresh air,she cried into his chest while he soothed her. He couldn't believe his mom could go as low as offering to pay Michelle off to leave him,does his mom even care about his feelings?

"I want to go home" Michelle said in barely a whisper,he was glad that although his thoughts were somewhere else,he was still paying attention to her,if not,he wouldn't have heard what she said. She wiped her tears,

"Let's go inside" He then said,taking her by the hand and leading her back into the mansion

When they got inside,they found Nathan and his mom arguing

"We are leaving" Derek said,gaining their attention

"But baby. You haven't even seen the present I got for you" Rebecca protested

"I don't want anything from you" Derek said indignantly

At that moment, Derek's dad walked into the living room,he looked at them confused

"Why aren't you all at the dinner table?... What's going on?" He looked at each one of them skeptically

"Dad,we're leaving... it seems mom doesn't want us here"

Mr Howard then gave his wife a disappointed look

"It's okay son. I'll come see you in the office"

"Okay Dad. I'll be expecting you"

Mr Howard was kind enough to see them off

The ride home was quiet and awkward, Michelle sat a little distance away from Derek and Nathan. Derek understood that she was hurt but he wanted to be there for her,it was hurting him that she wanted to just sit all by herself,if only he had listened to her when she pleaded to stay behind,this would've been prevented.

When they arrived home, Michelle hurriedly climbed out of the limo,she got into the mansion and went straight to the back where the swimming pool was located,she wanted to be alone at this point. Never has she given Derek's mom any reason to see her as a gold digger so why would she come up with such assumption? She always insulted her with several other hurtful names but this,this was too much, Rebecca was beyond willing to kick her out of Derek's life no matter what even though she had never wronged her.

Derek on the other hand wanted to be with his girlfriend,as much she wanted to be alone,she needed him by her side. He was about joining her by the pool side but was stopped by Nathan who placed a hand on his shoulder

"She needs some time to herself...you should respect that"

Derek nodded in understanding,he turned around to look at Michelle one last time before going upstairs.

An hour had passed and Michelle wasn't yet in the room,Derek sat on the bed with his back against the headboard waiting for her,he had changed into a white T-shirt and black sweatpants. He couldn't help but wonder why Michelle wasn't back in the room,he was quite worried and at the same time scared,he only hopes that she hasn't done anything dangerous to herself,no, Michelle wasn't that kind of person but at this point he couldn't help but worry because she was really sad when they got back. He knew Nathan had asked him to let her be but this was unbearable,he then decided to go to her. He was about climbing out of bed when the bedroom door opened, Michelle quietly walked in,closing the door quietly behind her. Derek noticed she had wrapped her hair in a messy bun,her eyes were puffy and red from crying,he watched her carefully as she walked into the closet and later came out with a pink night shirt in her hand then walked into the bathroom. After waiting for 15 excruciating minutes,Derek noticed the door to the bathroom open and Michelle came out,she was now in her night shirt with her hair now poured down and slightly wet,she walked towards the bed and quietly crawled into bed towards Derek,she snuggled herself in his arms and he immediately wrapped his arms around her protectively as she placed her head on his chest. They stayed like that for an hour,neither of them wanting to break the silence so as not to refresh their memory of the awful encounter with Rebecca. Derek adjusted their position so they were now comfortably settled on the bed and tucked them properly with the duvet as they fell asleep in each other's arm.
