Act One, Scene Two

Ext. A dark street outside Lucy's apartment.

Fade in to a medium shot of Mickey's car, his windshield is center screen and the rest of the car fills the frame. The car comes to a stop under a street light and the driver puffs a cigarette. After a moment the passenger side door opens and the car is illuminated revealing Mickey as the driver. Lucy gets in the car and closes the door and the car goes dark again. Neither say anything and the car pulls away out of frame.

Cut to a brightly lit diner in a over the shoulder shot. David is holding a cell phone and checking it frantically. His head is down and he's slouching in the booth. His hair is messy and he has cuts, bruises and one hand is bandaged.

David

"Come on.."

He mumbles and cusses under his breathe cutting to a low-angle shot, looking up at a waitress holding a coffee carafe standing in front of David. She glares down at him for a moment.

Waitress

"Sure you don't want something other than coffee?"

David jumps slightly

David

"No. No, thank you. Just coffee."

The waitress tops off David's Cup as his cell phone vibrates and lights up. Close up shot to a message that is just a phone emoji. David bursts out of the booth, squeezing past the waitress and goes to a pay phone on the wall. Medium shot of David from the waist up, dialing a number and huddling close to the phone.

Voice Over Phone

"You Fucked Up."

David

"Daryl! Come on. The pigs were everywhere man, it wasn't my fault. I was in there 3 minutes, in and out."

Daryl

"Do you have it?"

David

"I had it. He gave it right over and I only took what was in the front case. They had me blocked in and I made a break for it, but one of those donuts eating bastards clipped me with his cruiser and I lost the loot."

There's a moment of silence and then the call ends.

David

"Fuck"

David returns to his booth as the camera pans to the window. Mickey and Lucy pull up to the diner, they get out of the car and walk in and sit down at the booth one down from David's. Point of view shot of the booth looking into the diner. Lucy and Mickey on each side of the frame as the waitress walks up center screen.

Waitress

"What can I get you two?"

Mickey

"I'll take a Super Slam Three Meat Breakfast with a side of hash browns and coffee."

Waitress

"And you sugar?"

Lucy

"Just coffee."

Waitress

"Alrighty, I'll put that in and be back with some fresh coffee."

Camera pans down passing an empty booth and then arriving at David's booth.

David is manic and looks for his cigarettes. He pulls them out and starts packing them. The waitress, walking near by with a coffee carafe notices.

Waitress

"Backdoor."

She gestures to the backdoor. David gets out of the booth and walks towards the door as the camera pans back to the couple.

Lucy

"I'm going to smoke."

Mickey grunts. Cut to EXT. Alley behind diner. Wide shot of the back of the diner and an alley on the right side. The back door on the left side of the shot. David is leaning against the far left wall smoking a cigarette as Lucy exits the diner and Loiters awkwardly for a moment.

Lucy

"You got a light?"

David

"Uh. Oh, yea. Right here."

Lucy walks across the shot, joining David, far left under a street light. He lights her cigarette.

Lucy

"Thanks."

David

"Yeah, no problem."

Over the shoulder shot, over David's shoulder with Lucy center frame. They share an awkward silence.

David

"So, that your boyfriend in there?"

Lucy takes a drag from her cigarette and leans back against the brick building.

Lucy

"Something like that. I kinda work for him. I've known him since I was little. So, are you the dishwasher here or something?"

David

"No! I live nearby. Gladys brews the best coffee in the entire east side."

Lucy

"Tastes like burnt chalk water, if you ask me."

David

"Hey, watch it now. Gladys hears you talking about her Joe and we'll both be black listed. Where do YOU buy coffee then, huh? One of those trendy, barista places downtown?"

Lucy

"Do I look like the kinda girl that hangs around one of those places? I can't even remember the last time I've left the 5 blocks of Liberty Square."

Lucy finishes her cigarette and puts it out under her left heel.

Lucy

"Well, thanks for the light. I gotta get back in."

Lucy walks to the door

David

"Hey, I never caught your name."

Lucy

"That's because I never gave it to you. See you around dishwasher."

Lucy went back into the diner and David takes a last puff of his cigarette and bends over and put it out. When he stands back up he's sucker punched and scene cuts to black.
