Him

Everly and I spent the next hour talking and getting to know each other again. I was in absolute bliss. There was no more awkwardness or tension which was probably because I stopped asking her personal questions and instead talked about myself.

I told her about the time Kyle and I pranked Ms. Jacobsen in the seventh grade and about the time a friend I got caught breaking into a neighbor's pool to go skinny dipping in the middle of the night. What she didn't know was that that friend I was with was actually her. It was one of my favorite nights that I spent with her. Everly found the story hilarious as I told it but I clearly remember her not finding the situation amusing back when it actually happened.

Every story ended with us laughing. I loved hearing her laugh. It was possibly the best sound that I had ever heard in my entire life. Everything about her was like a life saving drug that I had been deprived of for so long. I felt like I was living again.

"Jaaannnneeeeyyyy!" We both jumped at the noise of a door slamming at the back of the shop and I had the sudden urge to jump and protect Everly from whatever or whoever it was. "How's it going? Has this been just the most exciting day of your entire life?" A voice asked.

There was a girl coming through the back door. Everly turned to look at her and then looked back at me. "That's Penny. My shift is over. She's come to take over for me."

"Oh," I said. Did that mean that she was leaving? I didn't want her to leave. I didn't want to stop talking. I could sit and talk to her forever.

"Please tell me you didn't spend your entire day cleaning; I told you not to," the girl, Penny, said. She paused. "Although, I guess that wouldn't be too bad for me," Penny said, coming into the front. She looked at Everly. "Hey, I wanted to tell you- Holy fuck!"

Penny's gaze had fallen on me. Her attraction to me was obvious. My wolf growled, not liking when another girl was looking at us in front of our mate. He found it rude.

I didn't like it either. I would never, ever be with anyone besides Everly and the last thing that I needed right now was for Everly to think that I would even consider being with anyone else.

I looked at Everly only to see her face scrunch up in annoyance. She stood up from her chair. "Penny, this is Jace. Jace, this is Penny."

Penny came toward me and jerked her hand out for me to shake. I jumped down from the counter I was on and took her hand in mine. "Hi, Penny. Nice to meet you."

"And you as well, Jace. Nice outfit," she replied, scanning me from head to toe. She looked over at Everly who was now glaring at the floor. "And Jace would be...?"

Everly looked up. "Oh, um, Jace, well, we actually just met. He, um..." Everly stammered.

"I needed to get out of the storm and Jane here offered to let me come in and warm up and make me a hot chocolate. And we ended up talking," I finished for her.

"He was just keeping me company," Everly said, giving me a small smile. I smiled back.

"Uh huh..." Penny said. "Jane, would you come with me for a second?" Penny was suddenly pulling Jane into the back of the shop, out of sight. My wolf and I didn't like the fact that we couldn't see her anymore. He wanted me to go back there and never let her out of our sight but I quickly suppressed him.

I debated on whether or not to listen in on their conversation. With my werewolf hearing, it would be hard not to. But if I wanted Everly to trust me again, I would have to do things that were trustworthy. So I went to the other side of the shop and tried my best to keep myself distracted so that I wouldn't be tempted to listen to what they were saying.
