After Lucas had graciously showed me to my locker we walked towards the eastern wing of the school were English and Language classes were held. “It’s basically Mean Girls kiwi style,” he continued as he gave me a run down of Edmond. He spun around dramatically. “You’ve got your freshman, your ROTC guys, preps, J.V jocks, Asian nerds, cool Asians, Varsity jocks, unfriendly black hotties., girls who eat their feelings, girls who don’t eat anything, desperate wannabes, burnouts, sexually active band geeks,” He pointed to himself “The greatest people you’ll ever meet” he put his hands on my shoulders and said in a low voice “and the worst… The plastics!”
I stood there with my eyebrows raised and a smile that spread from ear to ear. “I’m impressed you remember that whole quote.” He put his hands behind his head and started walking backwards. “Mean Girls is my guilty pleasure.”
“So, you’re the greatest person I’ll ever meet, huh?”
“Sure am.”
“I’m tempted to throw in a Harry Potter quote about how I can pick my own friends.”
We laughed together and he smiled down at me. He looked me straight in the eyes and that’s when I noticed how blue his eyes were. I felt as if I was drowning in an ocean but I could still breathe, better than I could out of the water. I looked away, still smiling and giggling. He stopped and motioned slightly towards the door in front of us. “English.” He sighed and looked at his watch. “We’ve got 15 minutes of class…” he peered through the small window in the middle of the class and his happy and friendly demeanour disappeared. The ocean in his eyes became dull and grey as if the tide had been sucked out. “Do you… Do you like English?” He flicked his focus towards me “Hm?” he shook his head “Yeah, yeah I do just…” He put his hand gently on the metal handle and took a deep breathe. “Jocks and plastics.” Was the last thing he said before he lightly opened the door. I followed behind him knowing what he meant but not bringing it up any more. All eyes were upon us as soon as the door clicked shut. Lucas made his way over to a desk at the back slouching miserably and I followed. Someone cleared their throat loudly “Excuse me… Lucas aren’t you going to introduce your friend?” I turned around on my heel feeling like a completely ass for not even acknowledging the teacher. “Sorry Miss.” I stammered “I’m Amanda, I’m…” The teacher interrupted me “New student. Right.” I knotted my fingers together nervously feeling everyone’s eyes still on me. “We have a seating plan so” she clicked her tongue on the roof of her mouth before taking a few steps over to a cluster of 4 desks “you can sit over here.” She patted a desk close to her. I nodded and looked back at Lucas, who was staring blankly up at the ceiling, before making my way to the desk. I sat down at the desk and looked around. The room was full of posters stating all sorts of grammar shit I had learned in year 5. I looked towards the whiteboard and tried to decode the teacher’s horrific handwriting. I must have been staring the board blanking because someone at my table spoke up. “We’re starting off with doing film study this year.” I looked at the girl who had said it. She smiled wide showing perfectly white and straight teeth. Her bleach blonde hair fell past her shoulders in flawless curls. “The teachers never had beautiful writing. She usually does power points.” I smiled back “I guess I missed the whole welcome to a New Year speech, huh?” The girl shook her head “Miss Forte doesn’t do those. She’s a ‘get right into it’ kind of teacher.”
“A fucking useless one too.” The girl across from Blondie said. Her hair was straight and around about the same length as mine but it was on fire. She had the brightest ginger hair I had ever seen and I wondered if it was dyed or not. She looked up and I saw she was chewing gum. “Amanda? I’m Stacey.” I smiled and muttered hi as the girl next to me smacked herself in the face in a dramatic face palm. “How rude of me!” she groaned “I’m Riley.” I half laughed mostly just pushing air out my nose “Nice to meet you both.”
“And this handsome man is Ian.” I furrowed my eyebrows before turning to look at Ian who sat right across from me. My jaw nearly dropped to the floor. Handsome was a completely understatement. Ian was flipping gorgeous and I have no idea how I didn’t notice him before. His short messy was styled wonderfully and didn’t look greasy and full of product like a lot of boys hair did. He didn’t look up from his notebook which he was writing vigorously in so he didn’t catch me staring at him. His jaw was sculpted by gods and his cheekbones were high on his face. I swallowed my heart which had jumped into my throat before slowly and painfully looking away towards the board. Just as I was about to grab a book from my bag to begin writing the notes the bell rang. Almost everyone in the room stood up in unison and started making their way to the door. As stood, threw my bag over my shoulders and got ready to find Lucas when a Riley grabbed my hand. “Do you know where your going?” she asked. I shrugged my bag on to my shoulder better “Science, N12. Lucas said…”
“Lucas.” Stacey and Riley said together. Disgust filled their tone. “Yeah, he has class with me and he said he’d show me.” I looked behind me to where Lucas had been sitting and saw him standing their. I smiled at him and he tilted his head up and half smiled back. Before I could make my way over to him Riley thrust her arm through mine and forced us to link together. “Lucky for you I also have science N12 so you don’t need to rely on that dork.” Before I could say anything in defence Stacey moaned. “I have art so I’ll see you guys at morning tea.” She gave Riley a peck on the cheek before scurrying out the door. I began to reject the offer when Riley practically started to drag me out the door. I tried to look back at Lucas but couldn’t see him. I sighed and decided to just go with it. I’d see him in science. We were half was to the Northern wing when Ian appeared beside me. “Come on Ri, her practically dragging her. Let her go.” He said and the world stopped. His voice swam through my veins like caramel and chocolate making their way towards my heart before melting it. His voice felt like velvet running down my bare skin. I could have stayed in that trance all day if it wasn’t for Riley squeezing my arm tightly. “Sorry” she giggled before letting me go. I mumbled fine before we walked into the science class. I watched as Ian and Riley walked to the back row of tables, Ian engaging in some advanced handshake with a guy already sitting their, and I sneakily glanced at Ian some more. He wore a leather jacket that clung to his arms showing his massive biceps yet it still looked so easy to move in. I was moving my way down his body when Lucas appeared beside me. I jumped back getting a fright. “You scared me!” I playfully punched him on the arm and he recoiled “Ouch…” His bottom lip stuck out and his eyes went wide with sadness. “Oh that didn’t hurt.” He laughed rubbing his arm before he turned solemn. “I’m sorry you got stuck with Riley.” He mumbled quietly as he looked down at his feet. For the second time this day before I could speak I was interrupted. Riley stood beside Lucas looking up at him with daggers shooting from her eyes. “Look, I’m going to say this once.” She put her hands on her hips and that’s when I saw a picture of Regina George flash in my mind fleetingly. “Amanda is the hot new girl and she doesn’t need you,” she spat you with such venom I shivered “dragging her down. She grabbed my hand and began to drag me towards the back table. My heart sank as I looked at Lucas but being the no confrontational insecure cow I was I said nothing and left him standing there with the knives visibly sticking out of him.
