So you've decided to go with the staying option well the most important part of making a base is the barricading. Useful items are every where like China cabinets or even bookshelves. You also may want duck tape or nails or anything that can hold things together.
The most important rule is to always have the windows boarded shut. If your in a group you should have a guard tower to keep watch for walkers and for survivors.
