The darkness seemed to consume her apprehensive body as her trembling hand reached for his unsure one. She stared deep into the sea of bright green liquid emerald, as she gathered up the the last ounce of strength that remained.
He felt confused as he continued to stare at her. She appeared to have lost all sense of her unfading confidence, and that made him worry.
With her small hand still holding onto his larger one, he gave her an unsure smile. His mind was racing with uncertainty, as an awkward silence lingered between the two teens. He rubbed the back of his neck as it was quickly becoming unbearable.
"Uhm... Are you... Okay, Ladybug?" He timidly asked.
She didn't say anything for a moment; just staring at his sculptured face. They were standing in such a close proximity that she could smell his cologne.
She blushed a dark shade of red as she instantly reverted her gaze to the ground. She was trembling in fear, but she wanted to tell him. Her heart was dying to let it all out.
Why was this so difficult? She scolded herself.
"I... Uh... Have something to tell you..." She tried to sound as assertive as possible.
His eyes seemed to soften as she began to look at him yet again.
"Are you okay?" He questioned her hesitation.
"Yeah... Yes!" She almost shouted. "I have to tell you something, but I don't really know how to..." The sadness was apparent in her quavering voice.
As if instantly, he held onto her shoulders and stared into her beautiful bluebell eyes. His fingers began to gently rub her concealed arms as he gave her a sweet smile.
"It's okay, LB... You can talk to me. That's what friends are fur!"
She playfully rolled her eyes at his attempt to ease the unwanted tension.
"Thanks, Kitty. It's just... If I tell you what's on my mind, there will be no go backs. No reset button... I'm just afraid of your potential reaction." She honestly admitted.
He looked at her with concern and understanding. She was his best friend, and he just couldn't bare the thought of seeing her upset.
"Look at me," his sweet voice seemed to sooth her internal suffering just a little. "I don't know what you want to tell me, but whatever it is... You can trust me. I purromise." He held his hand over his chest for emphasis.
His calming words seemed to bring back her strength. She gave him a sincere nod, and let go of his hand.
She had to do it now, before all sense of faith was gone forever. She smiled as she looked to the starry painting that rested above their heads.
A single stream of gold traveled across the evening sky as her gaze remained transfixed on the spectacle above. Without a shadow of a doubt, she could feel her heart begin to flutter with wonder.
With her eyes closed, she made a wish.
Her eyes shot open and she smiled. I can do this! Her confidence was yet again restored as she looked at the very muscular blond that stood in front of her.
"Okay! Chat Noir?"
"Yes..?"
She took in a deep breath, "Iloveyou! I have, since the very first day. I'm sorry if this is a little awkward for you, but I just had to tell you..."
Chat was shocked! His eyes were wide and his heart was beating fast. He couldn't even believe it!
He remained speechless, "I... Uh..."
Ladybug could feel her heart breaking. Every second worse than the last. She saw this coming from miles away, yet she didn't stop herself. She felt like such an idiot, and wanted nothing more than to just disappear for all eternity!
With a tear rolling down her cheek, she looked at the boy who she loves and fell to her knees, defeated.
Her sobs seemed never-ending as the cat-like superhero gently rubbed her back. His eyes were sad and his heart broke.
"Ladybug?" He asked in a whisper.
No answer.
He sighed. All this time she loved him, but he was just to blind to see it. Why did the universe hate him so much?
"Ladybug... Please listen?" He begged.
No answer.
"Ladybug. I'm really sorry... Please don't hate me..."
"I don't hate you..." It was almost inaudible. "But please... Just tell me one thing?"
"What's that?"
"Do... Do you feel the same way about me?"
She was desperate to know. Maybe there was still a chance...
His silence was enough of a confirmation. Her sobs only seemed to intensify as the tormenting seconds passed.
"I'm so sorry, Ladybug... I never wanted to hurt you..."
She immediately snapped, "Do you not like me because I'm such a failure!?"
"What?"
"... Nevermind..."
Chat grabbed her wrist before she left. He felt terrible, and just hoped that she would forgive him.
"You are definitely not a failure! You are the smartest person I know, and your desire to save everyone is beyond amazing. It's just..." He hesitated for a moment. "... I'm in love with someone else..."
Her eyes grew wide as he said those words. She should have seen it coming. Of course he liked someone else... He was probably a Heartbreaker in his civilian form.
"I see..."
She yanked her wrist away. With the tears still falling, she disappeared into the lonely darkness.
Chat was left looking down upon the quiet city as he watched her fade away into nothingness. His heart was broken, but he didn't know what to do about it.
I really messed up this time...
He reached for the lucky charm in his pocket. As his digits felt every inch of the unusual gift, vivid memories of the past few years came flooding into his mind.
Forgive me, Ladybug...
If he had never met Marinette, perhaps things would be different.
But deep down he wasn't so sure.
