"School"
Being woken up by an obnoxious alarm is not the most pleasant way to wake up, but it is the quickest. I picked up my phone and dismissed the notice. I checked the time. It was 5:15 AM when the realization hit me; I only got four hours of sleep as I sat in bed—contemplating if I should stay in bed all day and skip school. I slowly crawl out of bed, stretching as I stand up. Walking into my sibling's room to see them sleeping peacefully, I walk out of their room. I was heading to the bathroom to take an overdue shower and get ready for today. Making my way to the cabinet with the facecloth and towels, grabbing one of each, I take off my oversized tee shirt and bicker shorts and turn on the hot water in the shower. The water is warm and inviting, but I shower alone with no one else to invite in. While standing under the warm running water, my thoughts taking over. "Alone" I haven't had a boyfriend since. I don't know when, maybe, freshman year. I frown at the memories of that time and those unforgettable moments. Snapping out of my trance, feeling the warm water growing colder by the second so, I quickly wash up and get out of the shower. I covered myself in the towel, walked back into my room, and headed straight for my closet.
I stood in my closet looking searching for the right outfit for the day until I settled on a plain black tank top with a black flannel to go over it to cover my "exposed and distracting" shoulders. Putting on a pair of light blue ripped jeans, put on some random socks, and throw on my Chuck Taylors; now it's time for makeup. I'm feeling a natural look today, light and beautiful. I finished my makeup. "I look gorgeous today," I say to myself. I'm heading back to the bathroom to do something with the mop of hair on my head. I'll do a quick up-do. I finish up with my hair, move on to brushing my teeth, and finally leaving out of the bathroom. Checking my phone for the time. It was 7:20 AM. It took me longer to get ready than I had anticipated. I walked into Alice and the boy's room to wake them up. "wake up, sleepy heads," I said, running around their room, opening the curtains and pulling their covers off of the three of them, "hey" they whined in unison the light of the sun hitting there faces "it's a beautiful day out today, and you'll spend seven of the twenty-four hours in school" they groaned at the sound of school at least they get recess.
They sluggishly got out of bed, going to their dressers for their outfits that had to be approved by me. After they get cleaned up and dressed, I take Alice into the bathroom to do her hair in two French braids. She asked me one of the many questions I dreaded answering. "Why do we live here Sissy-Mommy? We could live anywhere, but why here?" I look down at her, thinking of an excellent way to say we're broke. "Well, I like it here. I grew up here, so why move away," part of what I said was genuine, but I despise living in this neighborhood. Finishing her hair and letting her join her brothers downstairs, they had breakfast and grabbed their backpacks. We piled into my car and left. I dropped them off first, then picked up Lizzie and Kaylee.
Liz doesn't take long to come out because she is already outside. Lizzie takes her little sister to the bus stop and waits for her bus. I learned the hard way to pick up Liz first on they to school last year when I went to pick Kaylee up and found out thirty minutes later. Kay had just woken up. We were extremely late on the first day of junior year. Liz walked up to my car with a massive smile on her face. She opened the front seat passenger door sliding in. As she closed the door, I had to ask her what she was so happy about at 7:38 AM; "I did it. I made it official I'm dating Harper!" I was delighted for her, primarily proud she needs to make it easier for people to talk to her. I want to wait before I ask my next question. "That's amazing, girl, but does he know about your job?" I asked her.
Raising an eyebrow at her, she goes to speak as I start to pull off when her phone starts ringing. Lizzie answers it. I hear her say hello, then tune her out. Minutes later, we arrive outside Kaylee's house now. Liz hung up the phone. I turn to look at her. She is already looking my way. "That was Kaylee. She said it might take her a while to come out today." Liz rolls her eyes. It's not a huge surprise; the girl sleeps in almost daily. "Not a surprise she's always late coming out of the house but back to my original question, does he know?" I ask Liz as my car door opens. "Does who know what?" Kaylee says, slamming my door shut. "Hey, watch the door. This car is a rusty antic" I look back at her with a scowl. Kaylee gave me a pout as I drove off.
