Mimi's POV:
Using the hand that didn't have a billion wires connected to it, I looked through the photos on my camera, frowning at how little the amount of it was. The constant beeping of the machine beside me indicated my heartbeat, a reminder that I could die any time soon. Unfortunately for them, I could care less. A small smile lit up my face as I came across a picture of my mother, someone who had also died from the same condition as me three years ago. The same black hair and blue eyes that I had seemed to fit her better, as her tresses blew from the wind while she was sitting by the window, her blue orbs smiling.
"I miss you, Mama," I whispered, touching the screen.
The door opened and my father walked in with tiger lilies, my favorite flowers. He was wearing a smile but I could tell he was tired, dark bags under his eyes and disheveled hair to accompany it.
"Hi, Princess," he said, kissing my forehead.
I gave him a brief hug, inhaling his comforting smell of coffee and air freshener, something to distract myself from the smell of sterilizer.
"Hi, Papa."
He placed the flowers in a vase before sitting on a chair beside the bed, taking my hand and rubbing it comfortingly.
"How are you feeling?"
"Hm? Same as usual. Doctor Jeff came in earlier and gave me my shots so I am feeling a bit weary but other than that, I'm still the same ol' me."
"That's good to hear."
"How was it outside today, Papa?"
"Clear skies, heavy traffic and with winter coming, the leaves have begun to fall. I bet one day you'll be able to take pictures of it," he said enthusiastically.
I smiled and nodded my head but deep inside, I knew he was only saying it to satisfy me. He turned on the television to watch his football and I grabbed part of my black hair, braiding it absentmindedly. The sound of my door opening snapped me out of my thoughts and a familiar bald head came into view.
"Hello, Mimi."
"Hello, Doc. What can I help you with?" I asked, a bit confused because we had already finished today's round of shots.
"I'm here with good news."
"Oh! We're finally upgrading from chocolate pudding for dessert to a slice of chocolate cake!" I exclaimed.
"No. And no matter how many times you suggest it, it won't happen."
I pouted, deflating a bit.
"Then what else could possibly be good news?"
He paused before giving me a megawatt smile, well, as bright as dentures could get.
"Your Arrhythmia is finally under control. You can leave the hospital."
My dad inhaled deeply before shouting, giving my poor erratic heart a surprise. It took me a second to process the news before my jaw dropped.
"I-I get to leave?"
"Yes. All we need to do now is finish the paperwork before you're discharged tomorrow. Congratulations Mimi, your strong will to live proved to push all odds aside."
I choked out a sob as I hugged the doctor, feeling extremely overwhelmed and grateful at the moment. He was taken aback but awkwardly just pat my head. Letting him go out of embarrassment, I quickly wiped my eyes and nose on my hospital gown. He left the room and my father paced the room, seeming more excited than I was.
"S-so much to do, so many places to go. I knew you would be able to do it, Princess."
Beaming, I pounded my chest.
"I'm not going to let something like an irregular heartbeat kill me."
He sighed before giving me a bear hug.
"Your mom believed in you too. She knew you wouldn't give up so easily."
Nodding my head was the only thing I could do. We talked for a few more hours before gathering all his stuff as the sky darkened.
"I'll finish that paperwork with the Doc and I'll see you tomorrow. Oh, and don't forget to make a bucket list for the things you want to do."
"Ok, Papa."
"Goodnight, Princess."
"Goodnight."
He shut the sliding door quietly, leaving the room back in its silence, only the sound of the machine echoing. Grabbing a piece of paper and a pen, I scribbled a few of my thoughts onto there.
"Hmm, let's see. I definitely want to go to the TOP museum, maybe eat some ramen. God how long has it been since I ate some ramen."
The sound of a male saying 'I love you' made me look up at the still working television just in time to see a couple kissing. Feeling slightly disgusted but intrigued, I continued to watch.
"Love...huh," I muttered.
Finishing my list, I held it up and nodded. It mostly just consisted of eating places and places where I could take nice pictures for my collection.
"That should just about do it."
Placing the paper on my bedside table, I looked at the digital clock next to it and the numbers blinked 9:39 PM at me. Yawning, I stretched my body.
"I'm surprised I'm still up this late. I'm going to need my rest."
Grabbing the light switch, I dimmed the fluorescent bulbs till it was almost pitch black, the moon illuminating the room through the window. Snuggling under the warm blankets, I stared at the ceiling.
"Tomorrow's the day huh? The day where everything changes."
I closed my eyes with a smile on my face, ignoring the fact that on my bucket list, I had indeed written love but in a small and light style as if I was doubtful that it was going to happen.
"Goodnight, hospital. Prepare yourself world because I'm coming."
