The truck would not move as fast as Niall wanted it to.

The rain made the roads slippery and the windshield going blurry with each drop.

Niall sighed, honking at the herd of sheep. The sheep moved haphazardly, blinded by the sudden headlights. The farmer shouted something when Niall passed him. They were probably already exhausted if they were out at almost midnight. Maybe a sheep or two were lost.

Niall looked at the surroundings.

This pack was not very crowded, the community here was small and they preferred early life. Almost everyone was fast asleep in their homes. No bars or restaurants were open. The streets were deserted. If Niall called out, he was sure no one would come to help him in need.

The soft pitter-patter of rain kept Niall company, the streetlights too dim to see past a few steps. Niall hummed a song, the chilly air making him shiver as he tried to divert his mind.

He couldn't worry too much.

His babies wouldn't be able to handle it if he did.

The leader's house was in the middle of the pack, as Niall moved, his mind drifted back to his own pack.

Was it still his own pack though?

He couldn't help but feel this ache in the pit of his guts, the churn of anxiety whenever he thought about never meeting his friends again.

What about his father? No matter how he was, that man was still Niall's father.

And Liam...

Niall visibly shook his head, diverting his thoughts and rolling the steering to take the turn.

.......

The leader's house stood like a haunted house.

Niall had never liked how this packhouse looked. The plasters were falling off, the bricks showing the age of the building. The ivy, lianas growing on the walls. Niall could see the soft light coming from the door. A lamp hanging from the hook over the main-door.

Niall's hand covered his belly instinctively, his heart beating fast as he stepped ahead. The heavyweight box in his hand was getting heavier.

The pebbles crunched under his feet, almost rolling him forward as he walked.

He knew the leader was not that poor. He could afford a good house and provide a more secure place for his wolves but everyone was not Louis.

They didn't think too much about the others.

A smile crossed Niall's lips.

In their pack, even the guard-dogs had better shelters.

Someone was waiting in front of the house, hidden in the shadow of the gate. Niall couldn't see over the haze of the rain, his eyelashes clamping together.

On the porch, he heard the first howl.

The trees shook under the vibration. Niall's grip on the box tightened. The howl made his heart skip a beat, the fear merging with something unknown. Something that made his skin open with goosebumps.
