( August 31 )
The summer of my first year was lonely but enlightening. I took advantage of the three months to become a better person, physically and mentally. I saw on the way home from my talk with Sirius a sign for the summer ballet intensive at the Royal Ballet. I auditioned and got in! I learned so much and developed so much foot pain. I still don't know if that was a good idea. Anyhow, I got my school supply list. I've already headed off to Diagon Alley to purchase my things. I didn't see the marauders, though. I sure do miss them. I've already laid out my first-day outfit. A jean jacket, striped t-shirt, my trusty black leggings, and of course, my navy vans. I'm so excited! Another year of fun, studying, friends, and pranks!
( September 1)
That morning I woke with a start. The new school year, new things. I could get away from my dad, who was completely ignoring me. I could be Violet Doyle, individual and special. I threw my clothes on, grabbed my trunk and wand, then sprinted downstairs to the cab waiting for me. I took one last look at my house and I was gone. I arrived at King's Cross quickly. I jumped off, put my trunk on a trolley, then hurried inside the station. The clock read, 10:40. " Wow, I have a lot of time. I looked around hopefully, searching for the marauders. I frowned. They weren't anywhere in sight. I glided through the barrier, then saw the scarlet train in front of me. My memories flooded back to me, I had stood in this exact place a year ago. Then, they were cut short because of an angry grunt.
" Blasted-trunk!", a girl with light brown hair exclaimed, her hair flying everywhere as she tried to put her trunk back into her trolley. " Need help?", I smiled, patting her shoulder." Oh, thank you!" she said, her bright green eyes glowing. I lifted her trunk back onto her trolley and smiled.
"No problem. What's your name?", I asked. " Iris. Iris brooks.", she replied. I read her mind about my next question. " Are you a first-year? I didn't see you last year. Are you new?", I asked. She looked startled. "No, I'm technically a second year but I wasn't able to attend Hogwarts last year because...My mother didn't think my...magical abilities were enough", she answered, obviously lying.
"Hey, do want to sit with me and my friends?", I asked. "Oh! Um, sure, thanks.", she replied. " Oh, by the way, I'm a ligilimens, if you don't want me to read your mind, you can tell me now. "That's cool, but I doubt anyone would want to know what I think. I don't care".
I lead her through the aisles and saw the four boys sitting together in a compartment. I stuck my head in and waved.
"Violet!", Sirius screeched. I gave him a big hug, then gestured toward Iris. "This is Iris. Iris, this is James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter. ". Iris gave a little wave, then sat down on. I sat next to her, then said,
"James is a quidditch freak, Sirius is his best man, Remus reads a little too much, and Peter is chill.". Iris burst out laughing. I grinned, then started to talk to her. I couldn't help but notice that James kept on sneaking looks at Iris and she kept on blushing and looking away.
Sirius seemed to notice, and we snuck away for a moment.
"You thinking what I'm thinking?", he asked. "Of course, dummy. I'm a ligillimens." I replied, elbowing him.
"I ship it. Jiris will be the code name.", Sirius suggested. "I'm in. Operation Jiris it is.", I said, giving him a fist bump. We stepped back into the compartment, seeing Iris arguing with James. "Chill, love."
"Merlin, don't call me love.", she said, annoyed.
For the rest of the train ride, we all talked about what we did this summer. Once it stopped, we hurried off and went on the carriages drawn by thestrals.
I climbed aboard a carriage. Iris looked very confused and sat next to me.
"They're pulled by thestrals, you can only see them if you have witnessed death", I said to her assuringly. She nodded. I looked at her. "I know what you mean. My mum died, and my father is doing god knows who in his office".
"Oh, Violet, I'm so sorry. I'm also sorry that I lied to you. My dad died and my mum-", I cut her off, saying, "I know. Listen, Iris, if you need any help, any at all, you're free to ask. I understand your pain. My mum died when I was six. My father misses her, and I don't know what he is up to. I lived the rest of my life so far in loneliness until I went to Hogwarts."
We entered the great hall, me walking away from Iris to sit with the marauders. "I hope you're in Gryffindor", I winked. She smiled, then took her place in the crowd of first years waiting to be sorted. I sat, not even realizing that I was leaning on Sirius's shoulder. James whistled, then I gave him a stern look and took my head off of Sirius's shoulder.
"Aight bros, let's bet Iris's house.", James said. "I call Slytherin because she was mean to me."
"James, just because she doesn't show much affection towards you doesn't mean she's mean-" Remus started, but was cut off by James.
"Sirius and I call Gryffindor. 5 galleons." I said, holding up my fingers. Remus and Peter bet on Ravenclaw.
"Attention, everyone. We have a new student who was unable to attend her first year. Will Iris Brooks step forward to be sorted?", McGonagall announced. I saw Iris's embarrassed face and clapped loudly, hooting over the others.
She sat down at the stool and the hat was placed on her head. I bit my fingernails and crossed my fingers. James had his fists clenched and so did Sirius. I rolled my eyes. Remus and Peter had their eyes glued to the sorting hat's mouth. After what seemed like a long time, the sorting hat had made its decision.
"GRYFFINDOR!!!!!", it screamed. The whole table burst out into cheers and clapping. Iris hopped off the stool and sat next to me I gave her a huge hug and Sirius slammed his fist into the table as James jumped up.
"Hey, since Iris is in Gryffindor now, I think she deserves to be in our friend group since she and James have a little "relationship", don't you think? What do you guys say?", I asked. Sirius and I giggled. James blushed, Remus looked at them for a moment, then gave an approving nod. I patted her back.
"Welcome to the crew", we announced.
Iris hugged me. "No need to thank me", I said before she could say anything. I looked at Sirius. I could tell he was nervous. Then, the first years were sorted, one by one. "Black, Regulus?", McGonagall called. Sirius clenched his fists. As soon as the sorting hat touched his head, it sorted Regulus into Slytherin.
I squeezed Sirius's hand, then said, "Snuffles, it's going to be alright. Marauders and I are here. ", I assured. Soon, the feast began. Roast potatoes, steak, chicken pot pie, turkey, and many other delicious foods were on the table. "This is NOT going to waste", James said. Iris chuckled. I nudged her while cutting my chicken. She blushed. "I'm not letting you guys ship me." she said.
"Great Idea!", I replied, snapping my fingers.
After the feast, we followed the Gryffindor prefect as he led us to the dormitory. "Billabong", he said. The fat lady swung open the door and we all filed in. As he told us where the dormitories were, I looked around. The common room was so cozy; It felt like home. I led Iris to my dorm, opening the door to see three other girls in the dorm
" Hi Violet! ", they chirped."Hi guys, this is Iris. Iris, this is Marlene, Lily, and Mary.", I introduced. Iris gave a shy wave. Lily yawned. "I think we all need our beauty sleep", Marlene said, yawning as well as she climbed into bed. I unpacked my trunk, then brushed my teeth, changed into my pajamas, then turned off the lights. Tomorrow was a new day. The first day of another year of pranks.
