Chapter 3.
Finding answers is not a straight path.
So far since they had awoken in the Hospital Wing, the rivals had been staying there for a week. A long week, being that visits were so sporadic and they were not allowed to leave. Not that Madam Pomfrey or Professor Dumbledore precisely said they could not leave, just were very firm that they should stay in the wing for just a bit longer. Professor Dumbledore made various brief visits, usually to ask after their health, ask a few other odd questions, cast a spell or two and reassure them that the best minds were on the task to find out what was going on.
A few times Draco heard a soft conversation between the Headmaster and Madam Pomfrey before Professor Dumbledore would leave, possibly with further instructions as to their care or something. Never would he actually tell the pair stuck in the Wing, what the tests revealed, or if they had found any further information. A few times he probed Draco for details of the potion he used, tapping his nose as the Slytherin explained as much as he could remember. Which was awkward when he reached the point of how he came across the potion recipe, or having to mention the black hairs that had been with it. Something that had caused a bit of tension between Harry and himself for a short time, Draco sitting in the chair once the Headmaster left, and Potter still on the bed. Until the pain became too much and they were stuck together again.
Not that they were bored all the time. Potter's friends kept him up to date with homework and since Draco's own cronies did not seem like they would appear any time soon, much less any of the other Slytherin, Granger seemed to take it upon herself to supply him with his homework as well. And as seemed to be a common conversation, Potter was often asking Granger when she arrived, if she knew of any information about what was going on. She was always tightlipped about it, and if the Weasel was with her, she would usually be hushing him. Whatever this was, Professor Dumbledore didn't seem to want to spread details yet, either that or they really didn't know.
So by the evening, they usually found some comfortable position to work on the bed, or in a pair of chairs, or some other position that some point of contact could be made. They had found, with at least a little bit of skin contact, the prickling pain didn't come. Though the less surface area of skin touching, the sooner it would be uncomfortable to be apart that they would have to move closer. Which once of the study sessions included Granger one evening. They had fallen into a comfortable position, the bushy haired girl sitting on a chair, the rivals on the bed, leaning back to back as to use each other for a brace as they worked.
The low murmur of conversation as Potter and his friend studied together had become a distant drone in Draco's ear. It was so easy to ignore, focusing all his attention on the book spread open on his knees, carefully writing on a parchment. Arithmancy was one class that Potter did not have, but something Draco shared with Granger, likely because it was more complex than Potter could handle. He had just noted the answer to an equation when he picked up on the stilted conversation behind him. Ever since their friend had been found unconscious, Granger and Weasley seemed to be trying to put on a show that they hadn't abandoned him anymore. Though Granger had needed a few more reminders not to physically touch Potter, usually by the point of a wand and now she made sure to stay clear. But even the smart girl in the Golden Trio ran into problems.
And this time it was about Golpalott's Third Law. Almost absently he paused while he reviewed his work on the last equation, listening to the girl hesitate in trying to explain the Law to Potter. She knew it by heart it seemed, but to actually explain it beyond that point seemed to be useless. It was a review of the Law, as they had used it previously, but Granger wasn't in the class this year. "I...It was something about multiple parts becoming one whole with just one more part."
