Nathaniel's POV:

I was about to drift off when my phone rang. "Who...?" I muttered, half asleep. I checked the screen.

"Marc?!" I shouted.

"Nath, are you okay?" I heard my mother yell from downstairs.

"Yeah, I'm fine! Sorry," I yell back to her. I rubbed my eyes and checked the screen again. It was Marc. I took a deep breath and answered.

"H-hey, Nathaniel," I hear.

"What's up, Marc?" I ask, "Why are you up so late?"

"I, uh, I have something I need to talk about, and, well, you're the only one who I have in mind..." I hear him say. I blush. Marc was thinking about me?

"Okay! What do you want to talk about?"

"I... um, Nath, this is kinda personal, so do you mind if you keep it a secret...?" Marc asked shyly.

I blush deeper. 'What if he's going to confess?' I daydreamt a bit and forgot that Marc was on the phone.

"Hello? Nath?" I hear. I panic for a second. "Ahh! Sorry, what were you going to say?"

"I'm trans," Marc says, "and I don't know what to wear tomorrow on the beach! I usually wear dresses when I go outside in public, but I've never dressed up at school like that, and I'm scared that my classmates might reject me... so I don't know if I should wear a swimming suit or swimming trunks..."

I held my breath in. Marc was trans? I never knew that... What should I tell him?

Marc's POV:

I heard silence over the phone. I sighed; I knew that Nath wouldn't like me after my confession. I should've just sucked it up and wear whatever I wanted and get embarrassed... That would still be better than losing Nath.

"Hah... I guess you won't accept me now... Sorry for bothering you, Nathaniel." I say, about to hang up.

"Wait, Marc! I- I still love you the way you are!" He yells.

"L-love...?" I stutter.

"Ah! I mean, like you!" Nath corrects himself. "I think that you're perfect just the way you are!"

My face flushes in a deep red colour. 'Nath is complimenting me!' I think.

"Oh, so... what should I wear?" I question. I hear Nath pause on the other side of the phone, trying to think.

"How about... I tell our friends about this, and we can all defend you if anyone says anything wrong?" Nath suggests.

"What?! No!" I shout, then realize how loud I was. "Sorry. I mean, no thanks, I don't want to do that... it's way too risky."

"Why don't we just try?" Nath tells me, "It's worth a shot. And plus, I bet that no one at school would care, everyone loves you!"

"But, what about the people on the beach? What'll they think?"

Nath chuckles a bit. "We'll all defend you. Just be yourself, Marc!"

It's exactly what my mom thinks... should I really just go out there? I was still extremely nervous.

"Marc? You ok?"

"Y-yeah... are you sure this is really going to work?" I ask one last time.

"Of course. And... I'll especially be here for you, Marc." Nath says, and I blush. "I have to go now. We can meet up tomorrow before the beach; it's at 10 am, after all. We'll discuss this some more again tomorrow!"

I look at the time; it was 10:30 pm already. "Alright, Nath see you."

"Bye, Marc. Love ya." Then he hung up.

'Ahhh!!!!' I think. 'What did he mean by love? As... a friend? Or what? Arghhhh... I'm so confused. Ah... I'll think about it all tomorrow. Now, it's time for bed.'

I get into bed and dream of Nath all night.
