Sofia the First: The Rosebuds

Not Buttercups Anymore

Before Sofia was a princess, she had joined a girl scout group called the Buttercups. Her village friends, Ruby and Jade, were in the group, too. After Sofia became a princess, there were two new members: Meg and Peg, who were twin sisters. When it turned out that the Buttercups were going to hike in the forest, Sofia's stepfather, King Roland II, was worried that his stepdaughter would get hurt. That's why he insisted Baileywick go with her and make sure she doesn't get hurt. Baileywick succeeded in making sure Sofia didn't get hurt, but his efforts prevented her from earning her last badge and her Sunflower pin. When they talked it out, Baileywick agreed to let Sofia do the next activity herself. The last activity was to make a bouquet of daisies and daffodils, but Ruby's mother, Helen, warned the girls not to touch any Mettlesome Myrtle, a poisonous flower that gives an itchy red rash and blows the victim's head up like a pumpkin. But the girls knew what the Meddlesome Myrtle looked like, so they didn't have to worry. Unfortunately, Baileywick was worried, so he picked a bouquet of flowers for Sofia, which turned out to be the Meddlesome Myrtle. That's when he broke out in a horrible rash. The Buttercups decided to take Baileywick to Enchancia Castle, but the trail was so twisty and steep that it wouldn't be easy for Baileywick to climb down. Sofia found a trail that wasn't nearly as steep, and when Meg and Peg said that's where they go sledding, Sofia decided to build a sled that can slide on the grass. She led the Buttercups to build a sled, and they got down the hill quickly and took Baileywick to Enchancia Castle. Once Ruby and Jade got their Sunflower pins, Helen gave Sofia the leadership badge for getting Baileywick to the castle—and that earned Sofia her Sunflower pin. Then Helen made Baileywick an honorary Buttercup troop leader, and he'd already earned his first badge: the Being Prepared Badge.

Long before Sofia freed Princess Elena of Avalor from her magic amulet, Prince Hugo (who wasn't her boyfriend at that time) joined the Buttercups on a hike to Swamp Rock Hill. During the hike, he made a tent out of blankets he brought with him, and his green hiking outfit inspired the Buttercups to redesign the uniform—and they invited Hugo to join the Buttercups, and he'd already earned his first two badges: one for building a tent and another for redesigning the uniform.

Sofia and Hugo knew that life was full of changes, and there was one change coming for them.

The Buttercups had been out hiking in the Peppertree Forest, making bouquets of wildflowers. They were at the castle now, and Helen was giving Hugo his Sunflower pin. Sofia hugged Hugo tightly.

"Congratulations, Hugo," Sofia beamed.

"Thanks, Sofie," Hugo smiled.

"You earned your Sunflower pin just in time, Prince Hugo," Helen smiled. "You're all ready to move onto to a higher leveled troop: the Rosebuds!"

Hugo and the girls liked the sound of that. When they each got a new uniform, they each went into a changing room to change. In no time, they all came out, wearing their new uniforms. The girls had white tops with pink vests and red skirts while Hugo had a red vest, a pink top, and gray pants.

"We're not Buttercups anymore—we're Rosebuds now," Sofia smiled.

"Yes, you are, and I'm sure you're all excited to meet your new troop leader: Mrs. Prescott," Helen smiled.

A blonde woman wearing a Rosebud uniform came. "Hello, good to meet you all," she smiled, saluting.

The Rosebuds saluted their new troop leader.

"Tomorrow we'll be getting off to a great start," Mrs. Prescott declared. "We'll be at Miss Nettle's enchanted garden, and you'll have a chance to earn plenty of badges. Whoever fills their entire vest up with badges earns a special Yellow Rose pin." She showed a beautiful Yellow Rose pin.

Hugo and the girls were very excited, and they couldn't wait until tomorrow.

Later, Hugo flew home on his flying horse, Electra, and Jade, Ruby, Meg, and Peg were ridden back to the village in a carriage. Sofia's brother and sister, Amber and James, and their old friends from RPA came along.

"Hi, Sofia," James smiled. "How was your hike?"

"Great, thanks," Sofia smiled.

Hildegard noticed Sofia's new Rosebud uniform. "What are you wearing?" she asked.

"Everyone in the Buttercup troop has moved onto a higher leveled troop: the Rosebuds," Sofia replied. "This is the official Rosebud uniform—for the girls, that is. Hugo has the boys' version."

"Prince Hugo is a Rosebud, too?" Clio asked.

"That's right—he became a Buttercup long before I freed Princess Elena from my amulet," Sofia declared. "Tomorrow the Rosebuds are taking their first trip to Miss Nettle's enchanted garden."

"Sounds like fun," James smiled.

"It will be—there's no knowing what's in store," Sofia smiled.

Meanwhile, at Hugo's palace, his older brother, Axel, had just finished his daily training with their father, King Garrick. They were going along with a plan for tomorrow.

"Okay, Axel, should you need any help at all, just turn to your mother or anyone else who can help," Garrick said.

"Okay, Dad," Axel nodded.

Hugo came in and said, "Hi, Dad, Axel."

"Hey, baby bro," Axel smiled.

"What's this you're wearing, champ?" Garrick asked.

"My Rosebud uniform," Hugo replied. "Everyone in the Buttercup troop is in a higher leveled troop now: the Rosebuds."

"That sounds great," Axel smiled.

"It sure is, and tomorrow we're going on our first trip as Rosebuds to Miss Nettle's enchanted garden to earn gardening badges," Hugo went on.

"Ah, I see," Garrick smiled. "You know, your uncle Grimtrix and I were thinking about doing something with you tomorrow—and since you'll be on a trip with the Rosebuds..."

"You want to join us on the trip tomorrow?" Hugo guessed. "That's fine with me. We haven't done much in a while anyway. I'm sure Mrs. Prescott won't mind if you come along."

"Great," Garrick smiled. He pulled Hugo into a hug.
