It had been a few weeks since she came back to school. Farkle had been walking her to school every day, for safety. It was their usual time, but today Maya felt especially ill. Her doctor had warned her that depression and anxiety would only make things worse, and he was right.
Her mother shouted that Farkle was there, but Maya was having another coughing fit. Her blue eyes widened as she noticed that the petals were speckled with blood. "Oh no. Oh no."
"Maya, what's—"
Uncontrollably, Maya began dry retching. It hurt so bad... Tears welled up in her eyes, racing down her cheeks. Farkle tried his best to comfort her, but Maya was distressed. It was like something was pulling on her insides.
When she finally got it up, all she could do was stare. She saw it. Farkle saw it. It was just as they had said. A whole head of flowers. Maya was nearing the final stage. She really was going to die.
"Maya—"
"I'm fine", she lied. "Let me just brush my teeth and we can go."

Farkle couldn't keep watching this. Maya looked awful. Riley felt awful. It was too much. He had to do something. "Riley is the one Maya is in love with!", he blurted.
Maya slammed her pencil down, turning to look at her friend in surprise. "Yeah, well Farkle had the surgery because of Lucas!", Maya snapped. She hadn't meant to say that. She didn't know what came over her.
"Maya!"
"You started it!"
The two began to bicker. Cory had to break them apart. "You know what? You four, outside. Clearly, you all need to talk. And I can't be hold your hands for this one."
"Where are you two going?", Lucas asked, noticing that Maya and Farkle kept towards the main exit.
"Away from here", Farkle answered.
