Prompt: what really happened (prequel of "Double Dean")

TW: mentions of suicide

Dean gritted his teeth and shot the next Croat that he saw running at him. He huffed a breath and scanned for any more coming at him or his companions. Seeing that they had all been taken down, he nodded in satisfaction. "Let's move!"

The people obeyed without question, loading themselves into the trucks, Dean himself heading into the red pickup.

"Dean!"

He looked back to see a Croat launching itself at him and was about to shoot when it suddenly went tense and fell to the ground, dead.

(Y/N) stared down at it and blew some hair out of her face before meeting his gaze as she pocketed her knife. "You're getting rusty," she smirked.

He rolled his eyes at her comment and nodded toward the truck, although there was a small smile on his lips when she wasn't looking.

The two settled into the truck, and Dean started the engine, putting it into drive. "How ya feelin', sweetheart?"

She grinned. "Well, y'know, I could be better. The world couldn't be ending. That'd be nice."

He chuckled but couldn't help the pang of guilt in his chest. "Yeah. Sorry about that."

(Y/N) glanced at him and instantly frowned. "I didn't mean—"

"I know what you meant. It's fine."

She rested a hand on his knee in an attempt to comfort. "Dean, it's not your fault."

"Can we not talk about this?" he asked quickly without taking his eyes off the road.

She sighed and nodded, her hand returning to her lap, bouncing her leg. "It's not your fault," she muttered under her breath.

His grip on the wheel tightened, and they rode on in silence for a few tense minutes.

"I shoulda said yes," he breathed through clenched teeth.

She huffed. "Dean—"

"If I'd have said yes, none of this would be happening."

"You don't know that."

"Oh, yeah? The only reason Croatoan is out is 'cause Lucifer won by forfeit. Y'know, since they won't answer me now or anything. If I'd have said yes, at least we'd have a chance at preventing it."

"Dean, stop."

"What? It's true."

"No, either way, it'd be the end of humanity. We'd all go out like that. We'd have zero chance of surviving."

"Isn't it better to be completely wiped out all at once than slowly watching each other die?"

"So you'd rather have no chance at fighting back?"

"It's better than knowing that there's a chance you're going to lose someone you really care about!"

She tensed for a moment and lowered her head, twiddling her thumbs.

He scoffed a smirk. "What? Got nothing to say now?"

"Can we not fight please?"

Dean's brows furrowed as he glanced at her, surprised at the sudden sharpness of her tone.

"You're right. Okay?" She met his gaze briefly only to see he was looking back at the road. "You're right, it's better to just suddenly die all at the same time than... being forced to kill the people you love." Her voice broke at the last part. She paused before wiping her cheeks and letting out a deep breath. "How long until we get back?"
