Prompt: there's something wrong with him. (predecessor to "Over")
"Just let me see him!" she pleaded, following Sam from the library. "I won't talk, I won't say anything, I promise. Just let me see him."
He spun around abruptly, revealing a stern glare. "No."
"Sam—"
"(Y/N), listen." He put his hands on her shoulders firmly. "I get it. You want to help. You want to check and make sure he's okay, and that's fine. But you have to understand that it's not Dean."
"How?"
"Just trust me on this."
"Then at least tell me what was going on in there," she urged.
He opened his mouth but then shut it abruptly and turned away, grabbing his bag. "I'll be right back."
"Where are you going?"
"Gonna find a priest and head to the hospital."
Her brows creased. "Why?"
He stopped just before the stairs. "Promise you won't go see him."
She gawked in disbelief. "Are you kidding me?"
"Promise."
She glared for a long moment, then sighed. "Okay. I promise."
He hesitated before giving her a nod and ascending.
She watched him leave and huffed, sinking into a chair and letting her head fall back. Her foot tapped against the floor, filling the silence.
Just don't move, she told herself. Don't move, and she'll be fine. Don't even look around. Stay put.
Her body began to itch from being so still.
Resist it. Don't think about it.
Her joints grew stiff, begging her to pop them.
She wondered how Dean could handle it right now, being tied up and all. He didn't even have the option to move.
Why was he tied up anyway?
No, stop that. Don't think about him, even if Sam was being paranoid.
Her foot was getting heavy after tapping for so long. She stopped.
She hated the silence. She wanted to do something. She tried to determine an activity, but her mind kept going back to the only thing she promised not to do.
"Screw it."
She stood and took the path to the dungeon, stopping and hesitating in front of the secret entryway. She really shouldn't be doing this. This was a bad idea. Her head began returning to the right path as she took a step away. After a few more seconds, she sighed and shook her head, turning away.
"I know you're there, baby."
She froze at the sound of his voice, a slight shout so that she could hear him through the door. She glanced back at the shelves warily.
"I can smell you," Dean added, and she could hear his smirk—except it wasn't the one she was used to. His tone was too... menacing. "Come on, Riding Hood. Pay Grandma a visit. I won't bite."
She bit her lip anxiously, looking back the way she came. Her thoughts argued with one another, deafening the silence of her surroundings. Her hands clenched as she mumbled a curse in defeat and opened the hidden door.
There he was, cuffed to the chair that sat in the devil's trap, his grin a spitting image of the one she'd imagined. "There she is. The one and only." His head tilted back smugly as she approached. "How you been, sweetheart? Miss me?"
