BZZZZZZZZZZ
"Damn it." Link said to himself as woke up.
He opened his eyes, scratched his head before looking at the alarm clock, only to realize it was 7:35. This meant the alarm clock had been buzzing for over thirty minutes, and he was going to be late. He quickly brushed his teeth and hopped in the shower, flying through his morning routine.
After the quick shower, he scavenged through his closet to find something to wear. He slipped into some joggers and threw on a t-shirt and a hoodie. It was already winter, and the mornings were frigid. He also grabbed his gym bag, as he had basketball practice after school.
"No time for breakfast." He said as he flew down the stairs. He grabbed the keys to his truck and opened his garage door. Thankfully, the garage wasn't too cold, so the beginning of the car ride wouldn't be freezing. He opened Spotify, began playing music, and began to ponder what would happen when he entered the attendance office late for the second time this week. It was also Thursday, meaning that there is a possibility it could happen again.
"I need to set more alarms on my phone." He said aloud as he drove down the busy street.
When he finally got to school, he parked his truck and walked toward the attendance office. He was hoping that the Dean of Students wouldn't be there so he could somehow get away with being late again without receiving a detention.
"Good morning." Link said to the women at the desk as he walked through the door to the office.
"Are you tardy?" She responded.
"Yes, Ma'am."
"What class are you in?"
"Government with Mr. Highland." Link said as he looked toward the clock.
Behind him, the door to the office opened again. Link turned to see if it was the Dean of Students, but, thankfully, it wasn't. It was actually a girl in Link's class, Zelda. The two knew of each other, but they weren't really friends, so neither of them said anything. They made eye contact as Link turned to see who had opened the door, but then turned again after another voice spoke up from behind the counter.
"Ah, Mr. Bentley... and Miss Castillo. What are your excuses?" The Dean of Students said.
Link sighed in defeat. He was most likely going to get a detention. Detentions at Central High School were a pain, especially for Link. Link was the starting Shooting Guard on the basketball team and usually had practices right after school ended. This meant that his coach was going to give him an earful.
"My car wouldn't start, so my dad had to jump it for me." Zelda said to the Dean.
"Hmm... and Mr. Bentley?"
"Uh... I actually just slept through my alarm clock." He replied.
Zelda quietly laughed at his excuse, and Link turned to see her smiling at him, waiting for the Dean's response. He began to think how he barely knew this girl, even though they had both been at Central all four years.
"So... that'll be detentions for both of you. Be here no later than 3:05."
Zelda and Link both looked back at each other and sighed.
"Yes, sir." Link responded.
"Now, get to class." The Dean responded as he handed the two their tardy notes.
Link walked towards the door and held it, as he noticed Zelda was following behind him.
"Well that sucks." He said to try to spark a quick conversation. Link was a very open guy, and had no trouble talking to anyone at all. Zelda was the same way.
