As Sonic and Tails continued more throughout where they are, Tails was starting to calm down. In fact, he was so calm, the fox made a cute yawn. Sonic looked down at his buddy. "You doing okay, Tails...?" Sonic asked. Tails nodded with his dark eye lids halfway closed. "Well it has been a long time...," Sonic said. "And who knows what time it is.... So I guess we can stop for a rest...."
And so the two stopped at what seemed to be a comfy spot, and took a rest. Sonic laid back against a wooden log, and folded his arms back. Tails snuggled beside him and Sonic looked down at him and shrugged, not minding it. In fact, he chuckled a bit. As for Tails, as he laid beside Sonic, he felt safe and unafraid when he was with him. So he didn't have any trouble taking a little nap.
After what seemed like a long time, they were awoken by another rustling sound between some trees. Tails slowly woke up, and watched as the trees shook. He then gasped and shook Sonic up. The hedgehog groaned and slowly opened his eyes, now seeing the rustling trees. He knew what this meant. Someone was coming.
Sonic got in position, and Tails stood behind him. "Is someone there...?" Sonic asked. "I know you're out there...! C-Come out and show yourself...!" The rustling then got louder and louder. And then finally, something came out quickly! So quick, Tails fell back. Sonic then immediately got in position for a spin dash, and shot himself toward "it". It was a direct hit, and the "thing" fell back. Sonic ran toward what startled them, and his expression changed. "What was that for...?" The thing asked.
That thing that Sonic hit was actually an echidna. Only it was taller, skinnier, and had so many dreadlocks. "Knuckles...!" Sonic exclaimed. "Thank gosh it's you...! You scared me and Tails to death...!" "Wait...Sonic...? Is that you...?" The echidna asked. "Well...I may not look like it...hehe...," Sonic said, rubbing his neck. "And Tails is here too...?" Knuckles asked. He looked behind Sonic, and saw the quivering fox, looking at him with a frown. "Oh...I think you scared him...," Sonic said, looking at Tails. Knuckles got up, and slowly walked to Tails. "Hey...Tails...," he said. "I didn't mean to jump out at you...." Tails slowly walked up to him, and then wrapped his arms around him slowly. Knuckles just looked down at him and patted his head.
"Glad to see you two are alive...," the echidna continued. "Yeah...I thought we were all gonna be separated for good...," Sonic said. "I've been trying to look for you...," Knuckles said. "I saw something...and I wanted to show it to you...." He then reached behind him, and took put what appeared to be a big, glowing, green light. Sonic and Tails looked at it. It looked like an emerald shard.
"Is...is that what I think it is...?" Sonic asked. "Yes...," Knuckles said. "I found it when I woke up here.... I thought this would be important...and it would help us get out of here...." "So that means...we have to find the pieces of the Master Emerald again...so we could all go home...?" Tails asked. "Sure looks like it Tails...," Knuckles said, looking down at him. He then gave Tails the glowing shard. "Here...," Knuckles said. "I'm trusting you to hold onto this.... I hope it'll help you feel less scared...." Tails nodded and smiled, looking down at it.
"So if we find all the pieces of the Master Emerald...," Sonic said. "Then maybe we can go home...." "We may be...," Knuckles said. "But we have to find out where all the rest of our friends are...," Tails said. "You're right Tails...," Sonic said. "And we might need the Chaos Emeralds too...." "Then we can all figure out a way to get home once we collect them all...." Knuckles said. They all looked at each other, and smiled.
"When we're all here together...there is always hope...," Sonic said.
