The alarm clock sounded. I slowly sat up. I rubbed my eyes and threw my legs over the bed, stretching. I could hear the TV running in the other room.
"Ali! Char!" I called
"In here" Murmered Charlotte. She seemed dsitraught.
I stepped out into the open. Charlotte and Alissandra both gaped open mouthed at the television. I looked and my mouth soon fell agape to match thiers. Across the screen were the words, "The dead have risen". All it showed was a live stream security cam video of grossly mutilated rotting bodies roaming the streets.
"We have to get going" Said Ali.
"To where? We are in the literal middle of Houstan, if it is an issue we would be surrounded." Said Charlotte
"If we use my truck we can get out of town easily, I told you the big tires would be useful someday!" Exclaimed Ali. She insisted constantly during the three years we have been roomates that her 24 inch tires would eventually be useful for something. Despite the fact that thousands of people are dying, then proceeding to walk around and kill other people, her greatest concern is the wheels on her car.
"We shoul get going, then. We are hitting the grocery store, and we should also grab weapons." Said Charlotte, "do you still have those golft clubs Steph?"
I'm a professional golfer, so I keep lot's of clubs around the house. Instead of justifying Charlottes idiocy with responce, I simply went into the closet, picked my most expensive golft clubs, and walked back into the living room.
"Alright, let's go." I said matter-of-factly. Everyone had thier distinct trait. Ali was the sweet one, Char was the sour one, and I was the brains, brawn and beauty.
We walked out the front door. Then I saw it.
A man whom I may have once known, stumbling down the street. Huge bites out of his cheek and body, shredded and tattered chlothing, rotting flesh. Empty eyes. A deep groan exited his body, the sound as piercing as a sword stabbing right though your gut. I held my golf club and walked towards him, swinging hard into the side of his head. The rotten creature dropped. Motionless.
"I'll start up the car." Ali said solemly. Charlotte didn't say anything. We hopped in Ali's truck.
I didnt even look out the window once as Ali drove. We hit a couple bumps in the road, either people or things that were once people. Or still are? Are they aware, do they know what they are doing? Can they control themselves? What are they? We stopped in front of the local mini-mart. Nobody was inside noticably. Everything was suspiciously quiet.
We all jumped out of the truck, and walked towards the entrance, golf clubs ready. Ali took the lead and tried the door.
"Locked." She stated simply, as if it was a final placement, that the door could not be broken though, and that all hope was lost at this location. Charlotte had different ideas.
Charlotte walked right up to the glass of the front door and smashed it open with the golf club. Ali looked at me in shock. I shrugged and folowed Charlotte though the door.
"Canned goods first." I said. Even if this whole ordeal was taken care of within the week, we should bank on the fact that it was going to last awhile.
I grabbed a few grocery bags and began to fill them with anything. i decided as a last measure to take some chocolate and hard candies, just something to enjoy over the long hall. As I stuffed the bags I heard a sound nearby. I readied my golf club and moved toward the noise, coming from the freezer.
I threw open the freezer, and was immidiately met by a loud scream. I immediately lowered my weapon as I saw who it was.
"My god, Danny, you scared the shit out of me." I scolded. He was in my high school and we attended the same college, but I had absolutely no idea he was in Houstan at the moment, so his appearance surpirsed me.
