~One Month Later~

It was dark out. Ashley was shaking her head. Micheal cursing and shouting, causing the horde outside of the door to grow continuously more agitated. Miami was a mess, and it was looking pretty grim, but luckily we could get a port and depart eventually. A few days ago we discovered a safe zone in a tiny islands off the coast of Mexico called Cozumel.

My name is Danny, I was 16 when this all began, just over a month in the past. It felt like decades. I have seen people ripped to shreds by the dead, eaten whole. Ashley and Nick both just arrived in Miami, Ashley from the some farm in Georgia that got overran, while Micheal was with a group trying to get to the safe zone in Cozumel, but they got ambushed by bandits and most of them were kidnapped or killed. Micheal was the only one who escaped, and he now doesn't trust anyone.

"Alright, at sunrise, we charge out, we can't stay locked up in here forever." Insisted Ashley

About a week ago, me and her decided to hide in an abandoned supermarker. Concrete walls, tons of food, we lived in relative luxery. And then Micheal showed up with a horde behind him, and Ashley has been agitated since.

"With what weapons?" Asked Micheal

"Follow me." Stated Ashley

She ducked under the check out stations, finding a pistol under each. She handed a gun to each of us.

"We set up a barracade, and then we mow them down." Said Ashley in a demanding tone.

We went all around the store, pulling heavy objects toward the large glass doors, blocking out the entire area for a good ten feet, meaning it would be next to impossible for any of the dead to get past it.

"You sure about this, Ash?" Asked Micheal, "I mean, this could be dangerous, and we were safe here."

"Those doors are not invincable, they would crack it eventually, and I would rather be in control of the situation when they get in then end up being a snack." Stated Ashley factually.

I glanced out the window, looking across the parking lot. The first signs of sunrise were coming and Ashley was as agitated as ever. Pacing methodically back and forth, you could tell she was internally debating her course of action. To her, it was now or never and there would be absolutely no convincing her otherwise. The sun slowly began to creep across the horizon. I could barely hear Ashley, she was murming some sort of song , each verse ending in "Moriremos con la sonrisa.'" We will die with the sunrise. I knew her family was Texan, so the idea that she spoke spanish wasnt shocking, but something about the song didnt seem quite correct enough to be any sort of folk song. And given that the only part I could make out was "We will die with the sunrise" was not to inspiring.

Micheal was looking out the window. His group was probably among those dead. He was impatient. He wanted to get a move on. I agreed, if we where going to get going, it would be soon. The horde would only grow larger as time went on.

The sun began to creep up across the horizon. Ashley stopped singing, Micheal and I both looked towards her. We wne thtough the cashier desks, gathering every single one of the guns, so we could make a steady and continuous fire line, taking down the horde as quickly as possible.

We lined up behind the barricade.

"Are you sure?" I looked to Ashley, knots upon knots in my stomach. She nodded.

She began to count down. "Three, two."

She paused for a moment, closed her eyes and took a deep breath in. "One"

I aimed at one and pulled the trigger. I didnt see where the bullet went but the recoil made the gun slam into my forehead, causing me to fall over. Micheal and Ashley were both still firing, obviously having better aim than I.

The herd progressed in though the now broken glass. I fired towards them as quickly as possible, but there seemed to be far to many of them for us to handle. One by one they continued to fall, but they also began to edge dangerously close to where I was standing. I took a step back, aiming at one who stumbled too close. I pulled the trigger, but it came up blank. I had no bullets left.

I tried to reach around to grab the next gun, but the rotter grabbed me. I yelled as I stumbled over. It posied to bite me on the leg, but I kicked it in the head, sending the head spiraling across the floor, the body dropping onto the ground beside my leg.

I quickly stood again, grabbing my next gun and firing into the horde. I hit basically no headshots on the creatures, worthlessly striking them in the body and limbs, sometimes a total miss, only succeding in slowing them down or making them fall. Ashley and Micheal, however efiiciently managed headshot after headshot, thinning out the horde rather quickly when I was struggling on the floor. I shot the last one in the stomach, Ashley following my hit with a headshot.

"Well, I know who gets to stay in the middle." Stated Ashley, looking at me, "You only shot like, three of them in the head. I hope your good with something as a weapon because if not you could be 90 pounds of deadweight."

"Hey! I weight more than 90 pounds." I exclaimed, for lack of a better defense in the moment,

"That doesnt help your case." Remarked Ashley.

"Insulting me doesnt help your case." I retorted

She took a few step towards me. She was a few inches taller than me and was obviously keen on showing it. "Yeah, what are you about to do about it."

I tried to look her in the eyes, I opened my mouth to say something back, but couldnt muster anything.

"That's what I thought. Come on, lets go. I can hotwire a car." Said Ashley. She strode out in front.

She busted in the window of a sedan, full of groceries in the back. Unexpectedly, rose from the seat and tried to bit her arm.  She quickly withdrew her arm and pulled her gun, smashing in the brains of the creature once it had gotten withing effective range. She threw the rotter, a woman, out of the car. Maybe she had kids. Maybe that was a mother. It bothered me to think of them that way.

She got the car started and we rode out towards the docks. Ashley again began humming the tune of the song she constantly delved into.
