Odessa shouldn't have been surprised to find out her parents hated her enough to want to kill her.
When she first developed powers, her parents started to distance themselves from her. They weren't ever the types of parents who were super warm or loving, but she had a happy childhood. Or as happy a childhood you could have when you felt like your parents didn't exactly want you, though they never said such a thing to her, until she started establishing herself as a witch.
Her alienation didn't just come from her parents though. They came from her sister, who wished she had those powers because she felt like they would help her escape from her life. They came from her friends, who thought she would hurt them with her newfound powers, even though she assured them that she never would.
Odessa began longing for the time when she was ordinary. When her parents showed her affection, when her sister didn't look at her with jealousy, and when her friends wanted to spend time with her.
As time progressed, people distanced themselves from her even more. Her parents spent more time away from home, and her friends decided that they were too good for her. Her sister was the only one who seemed to change her attitude as she realized that she wasn't going to manifest powers anytime soon but she wasn't back to her loving warm self.
However, high class noble families began to require her services and paid her handsomely, so Odessa felt like there was some hope for her future, even if her parents didn't think so. The worse the illness or ailment, the more, they begged for Odessa's help.
A particular noble family began to have their eye on Odessa's sister as a match for their son, who was almost ten years older than her. Her sister didn't want to marry him, as she was barely sixteen years old, but Odessa's parents pushed her into the marriage, not giving her much choice.
Odessa was heartbroken when her sister was whisked away, and she figured she'd never see her again. Odessa's sister warned her about their parents hatred of their youngest daughter but Odessa didn't believe them, for who would want to believe that their own parents completely hated them.
When she was seventeen years old, she was hired to heal a sick boy by a high class noble family. She'd been performing careful spells and using herbs to help his condition, for weeks, but then one day, she performed the wrong spell and the boy died almost immediately. The boy's parents didn't blame her for the death of their son as they figured it was coming anyway, but her parents were furious.
They locked her in her room for days refusing her pleas and ignoring her cries. When they finally let her out, they seemed sincerely apologetic and Odessa was confused but forgave them.
However, behind her back, they'd deemed their daughter a monster, unable to control herself or her spells. They discreetly hire an assassin to kill her and offer him a huge sum of money. The assassin carries out his job and everyone just assumes that she committed suicide. Her parents pay him handsomely from the money that Odessa had earned from her numerous jobs, thinking that they had finally rid the world of their 'monster' of a daughter.
However, Odessa isn't dead and buried for long. She unknowingly raises herself from the dead, pulling herself out of the coffin and the ground that her parents had buried her in. With dirt on her face, in her hair and lungs, she figures out she has a new set of powers. She finds her parents to get her revenge and through their tears and begging, she gets the name of the assassin who seems to have all but disappeared from the world.
She spends the next year, seeking out the assassin and when she finally finds him, she tortures him slowly before putting him in the ground, just like he did to her.
Odessa isn't proud of her new abilities or personality, but if her parents and the world saw her as a monster, maybe a monster is what she should finally become.
