“And the la-and of the free-eh, and the home of the brave,” I was practicing the Star Spangled Banner for tonight. Hailey had come over, like she usually does before every football game, to make sure I was warmed up and ready. I love Hailey. She’s like the sister I never had.
“Oh my gosh, Kate, you are gonna be pro one day!” She said clapping her hands together excitedly.
“Aww, thanks!” I said, smiling.
“You’re welcome, but seriously!” She said, “You are so good!”
“Ok, well, I think we should go! We don’t want to be late to the first game!” I said, grabbing my light jacket off my bed.
Jake was already at the game. He was a football player, Wide Receiver. He was good! I thought he was going to be a pro football player when he graduates. He’s already gotten like 8 offers from schools all around the U.S.
“Ready?” Hailey asked me before we stepped out the door to the car. I got to drive Jake’s car because one of his football friends came and picked him up. I got in the little white Honda civic and started up the car. Hailey jumped in and I drove off.
When we got to the school, it wasn’t very busy. That’s probably because it was like 5:30 in the afternoon and the game didn’t start til 7:00 p.m. I walked up to the gate where you go into the football games and told one of the security people who I was. Our school is weird. The teachers are the security. I just so happened to get lucky and the security guy I talked to was my U.S. History teacher.
“Hey Kate! Ready to sing tonight?” He asked, while opening the gate for Hailey and I.
“Yep! I’m so excited!” I replied.
“Good! We need to see that energy out on the field! Hey, also, if you see your brother before the game, tell him I say ‘hi’” he asked.
“I will!” I said as Hailey and I walked off towards the field house. I had to go check in with the football coach to tell him I was here and ready for sound check. They always did sound check, because they didn’t want me to sound too quiet or too loud. I found my way to the coaches office.
“Hey coach! I’m ready for sound check!” I exclaimed. The coach loved me! Probably because I was the sister to THE BEST WIDE RECIEVER HE’S EVER SEEN! Haha! I always support my brother. He supports me so much, especially when we were young. My mom and dad had to work so much that he had to grow up fast. He always looked after me at daycare and everything because I am his little sister.
“Ok, I’ll let Wendy know!” He said, picking up his phone.
“Hey…yeah she’s ready…I’ll send her out…thanks!” He said.
“You can go on out,” He said gesturing to the football field.
“Thanks coach! Oh, can I go see my brother before the game?” I asked.
“Yeah, sure, go ahead. I think he’s in the locker room,” He said.
“Ok!” I said, “Thanks!” I said.
“Yep! Good Luck!” He yelled out the door.
“You too!” I said heading down to the locker room.
“Jake! It’s Kate! Can you come out for a sec please?” I asked, hoping he’d be able to hear me so I wouldn’t have to go in. I’ve already learned that lesson! Freshman year…Oh goodness…Let’s just say I don’t want to repeat it.
